Boycott Itch Cowards until they reverse the Mastercard Decision

This behavior from more platforms is just disgusting. They are shooting themselves in the goddamned foot, just like tumblr did years ago. Itch has the choice to stand up, and tell exactly what is going on, and make an actual stand. If anyone wants this to change, they're going to have to hurt Itch for caving to these disgusting demands. I will no longer be purchasing anything on itch, and encourage everyone else to do the same unless they reverse this decision. People have choices that are not mastercard, and  if platforms actually stood up to them, it would hurt mastercard. Fuck you Itch.

Itch isn't the bad guy just like Steam is. The real blame goes to Collective Shout, a right wing Christian organization that pressured payment processors to ban all adult games.

Call Visa or Mastercard:

Mastercard (Aus): 1800-120-113

Mastercard (US): 1-800-307-7309

Mastercard (UK): 0800-96-4767

Mastercard (US): 1-800-627-8372

Mastercard (Int.): +1-636-722-7111

Visa (US + Can): 1 800 847 2911

Visa (AUS): 1 800 125 440

PayPal: +44-0203-901-7000

Itch has the option to stand up

They could have made a public stink about all of this, and put the pressure on the right wing groups, but chose not to and to silently cave.
Boycott is the only option. If they don't reverse,  they deserve to fail

(+12)

Itch could die and that group will still attack another platform. That's why you have to accurately pinpoint them and payment processors as the culprit.

(+8)

Yea, gotta see the bigger picture, that won't stop on itch and people have to realise it.

(+15)

Itch made this decision overnight, no discussion, and has also not been paying out the devs involved, according to some of these devs. This is not "just the payment processors", Itch is complicit. They payment processors are the main problem, but itch is not a blameless victim.

(+3)

To add a bit of context - Itch.io previously had delayed payments without this whole thing going because of spam. This will just accelerate devs not being paid because they have to check which games can be allowed to pay in the first place. It's not so easy as "we will pay everyone until we figure out which games we can take down" as payment processing companies wanted immediate results. Steam didn't have discussions with the devs either, neither had DLSite nor platforms like Patronite when they were limiting what can be allowed on the platform.

(+7)

Shadowbans were the best option out of this. Either the entire site gets shut down or that genre of games become inaccessible. It's a lose-lose situation and they chose the best option. Your anger is better directed at Mastercard/Visa and CollectiveShout

(+9)

Theyve already started deleting some of the games on top of deindexing, and are telling the game devs they aren't going to be paid the money already recieved. Boycotting Itch is not only reasonable, its necessary to show them how bad they fucked up.

(+10)

And once again, Itch made ZERO EFFORT to discuss any of this with the community. They made their choice.

(+2)

itch's mistake is the way they handled all of this. But the whole fiasco is payment processors and Collective Shout' fault and they should get most of the blame.

Unfortunately, the all-powerful Steam also caved... That's going to be a tough battle.
Short term solution? Publish games on other platforms that are more friendly towards adult-themed games (easiest, but many of those platforms stinks) or self-host them and sell them yourself (difficult and expensive for most, requires legal advice).

Right wing? Collective shout is not right-wing... It's neither right nor left wing.

(+9)

Collective Shout was founded by Melinda Reist, a hyper-feminist, anti-abortion, anti-pornography, christian conservative. It carries her ideals and is her international vehicle. It is firmly right-wing bordering on alt-right.

It's not portrayed as such. I'm heavily right leaning, but this isn't something the right want. It's just them, the buttfucked old ass women who have nothing better to do than pester other people. You can't blame the right in general for this.

(1 edit) (+6)

That's funny, because Collective Shout's agenda, minus the feminism, is in the process of being forced upon the US by a hyper-right government.

EDIT: I wish there was a public edit history. The edits in this comment thread have obscured the reply context.

Collective Shout is, in my opinion,  just a front. People have been looking into it and found that CS has been around for over ten years, has never once succeeded in anything they attempted to do (they have been caught in many lies just like PETA has), has no financial backing, and doesn't even make 1k hits to their website a month. Suddenly, their backing went from next to nothing (none from government, which most organizations get from) to several million dollars. Also, CS is a group of 10 people and Visa and Mastercard would be losing billions on refusing these transactions, so whatever pushed them had to be something more than financial threat from a handful of people. There is clearly another entity at large here.

To add to the right wing comment, this exact push for censorship was detailed in Trump's Project 2025. Whether it is a coincidence or not, however, I can't say, but it is something to keep in mind.

Just drop paypal.
