Great little idea. I'm just not clear on the XP rules.
"You start at level 1. Whenever the D8 result is the same as your level, gain XP. When you earn XP equal to your level, gain a level, add 1 to one stat of your choosing and remove all earned XP."
So if I'm level 1, the only way to ever level up is to roll a 1? And a 2 at level 2 and so on? I don't get where the actual accumulated XP from other rolls ever comes into play. Do I always gain 1 XP when I roll equal to my level and try to build up to my level?

I think you mark xp whenever you roll the right number, and then gain a level once you've gained enough xp. So when you're level 1 and roll a 1, you get an XP and then level up to level 2 (since your xp == level). At level 2, you gain an xp the first time you roll a 2, and then gain an xp and level up the second time you roll a 2.
