There's some randomized pitch variation built in to any SFX to limit the repetitiveness of it and I've been looking into more leaf sounds as well. My original plan was to just have a few and then have the user select which one they like best, but after your feedback I think it'd be best to just have them all enabled by default, played randomly and give the user the option to toggle certain crunch sounds on/off for maximum satisfaction and personalization. There's also a screenshake effect that increases as you progress through the game to give the crunching a more tactile feel.
I did some searching for sounds and recording of my own, but it was tough to get something that didn't just sound like static. I'll have to put some more time into it for sure. Thanks again for the feedback!
Went through a bunch of samples and layering things in, but the more real sounds ended up sounding flat in the context of the game and not “fun”.
Instead layered in a thump sound to give weight to the stomps, added cute “hmph” sounds, made a couple variations of the crunch and hmph, and made the randomized pitch more noticeable to add more variety.
