You don't need to have either of them as slaves to advance in the story.
Having Connor or Martin as slaves just makes your job easier and faster, as you have their help, but if you don't have them, you can still advance in Daniel's story... just not with those options with Connor/Martin.

Many try to advance and go back in this scene to see if the result changes, but in this case, the first random result will remain valid for all subsequent times you go back and forth in the scene on that day.
