True. But if I were him, I’d still want to know why this is being done to me - what’s his endgame, and is there any actual benefit for me? The other side’s no better than the Dark King. The city hailed the protagonist as a hero, handed him weapons, and barked orders. Nobody cared that the MC was a complete greenhorn who literally couldn’t do anything. They piled sky-high expectations on him, then when he inevitably screwed up (predictably), they blamed him for everything and exiled him- along with the entire guild, despite their backbreaking work for the city’s sake. After that kind of treatment, you start wondering: why even bother saving this damned city and its people?

Well the spring sage was genuinely good to you, the people you worked with directly also went out of their way to try to help you, and the city was at peace compared to the monstrosities created by the big bad.

Of course, MC was treated well, - all because he had the label *Chosen One of Prophecy* hanging over his head. I’m sure no one would’ve cared about him if he’d just been a nobody. The only person who’s honest with the MC is Alex, who outright says he doesn’t give a damn who the protagonist is, since he doesn’t believe in prophecies. To him, the MC is just an annoyance.
