I tried out loading a font into the font folder and indeed it was very easy. (Just need to close GameTranslate before and open GameTranslate after.)

And here is the result :

From your description, I really was expecting far worse!

I feel that one part of the issue is a font size problem as OpenDyslexic tends to be pretty large.
When I see the

I feel it’s trying to fit the text into the frame and has run out of horizontal space.

Yeah, the horizontal spacing will differ between fonts and that's nothing I want to manage myself. I will incorporate a scale mechanic later on so people can raise or lower it on the fly as needed. However, what I meant with the misalignment of text is that you'll see the text drop a lot vertically, which will make the text completely misplaced in some cases. For example, 'Settings' and '1920 x 1080' are both majorly displaced on the vertical axis, and this is the font's fault.. Hopefully I can correct this programmatically, but this won't be looked at for a good while.
