At first, I saw "visual novel" and I nearly panicked there a bit (I am not too into that kind of thing). But luckily, this is more of a story adventure RPG type of game rather than the all-text one, so I am good XD. That out of the way, it's much better than I expected, given that your hard disk died, so this alone is very well done! Sorry for your loss though. The game looks reasonably nice with that pixel graphic, sounds good and fitting with the tone you are going with. The story is nice too, quite heartwarming and gave me a giggle from time to time. though I usually hesitate putting ongoing events in my own stuff, but that's just me, I still enjoy a nice story regardless. Good job.
For a criticism, knowing what's going on, I'll adjust accordingly. I'd really hope you could press E once more and show the whole text, rather than skipping it entirely. I've lost count of how many times I've missed the text because of my muscle memory of fast-forward text. This should make impatient people like me very happy.
Anyway, I think you did quite a nice job! Hope we can see the project in its full glory.
