I agree! It would be nice to be able to control the forward assaults a little more. I'll probably work on this feature a bit more.
The cavalry seems to be a bug on your end. If you email me some screenshots and some information about how you were playing the game I can try to fix the issue.

Basically they run through troops, dont interact, dont attack, dont anything useful
You'd be lucky if a whole squad of them made it past one trench even without extra enemy soldiers walking past
Even if they're intended to run past and capture whatever flag (doubtful), and even if they didn't have to run across the whole map while an enemy could spawn another wave, there's no point to them
