ASCII. Raytracing. Anything that can help you express your ideas, or at least teaches you how to work with artists.
But mainly, since you're a writer, work on your writing. Worst case, you can write a book. It can be a TTRPG! And in recent years there have been at least a couple of acclaimed games in the form of a fictional Wikipedia.
Too many game developers only have ideas. You're way ahead of the pack. Take advantage of that.
