For troubleshooting, you could first open up two windows on the same computer and connect them together via loopback (127.0.0.1). Then try connecting to yourself through your local IP address.
The mod uses https://github.com/Medo42/Faucet-Networking-Extension/ for networking (UDP only), which uses Asio, so there shouldn't be any particularly simple flaws.
