Keep in mind, portals could transport you everywhere! ;-) And don't forget, Valeria is a mage. Wand combat should not be the first option ;-) Build a strategy based on your map, where to go first.
I did not reach portals in my plays. I use both magic and non magic attacks. And I tried - when I'll get some spare time this weekend - to map correctly the academy.
