This looks very useful. Would this work where an NPC 'trains' the actor? I was thinking of having an actor bump up their profession by visiting someone who trains them in that profession for gold.

In my game I want to eventually have some towns evolve/grow as a result of the players actions - quests, buying and selling in the town and NPCs in the town grow their 'profession' (or new NPC arrives with a profession,) The town can also shrink in response to the players action. If the player decides on an evil path continuous raids will lead to a town being abandoned. 

Hi, yes you can have events "train" the player. There are plugin commands for gaining exp and gaining levels, so you can have your trainer NPC add a certain amount of exp or give the player a certain amount of levels when done.
