Since this topic was revived anyway, y'all realize that:

  1. some games don't have to be bought, since the minimum price is zero
  2. some games can't be bought, because their creators can't take payments
  3. even if someone bought / downloaded a game, doesn't mean they've played it
  4. even if they did play the game, doesn't mean they're writing a review in good faith

Basically: how exactly do you propose to, what, magically make people nice?

Please remember than the occasional one-star review has no effect on your game's visibility or anything.

Personally, my proposal is only for paid games, you should have to buy the game before you're able to review it. That is more or less how it works on Steam.

If a person buys your game and still gives it a negative review, fine, you at least made a sale off them.

This change alone would help prevent review bomb harassment by random people for paid products.

Now itch just allow to enable/disable ratings and reviews. Would be better to add some additional options like:

  • Disable ratings and reviews
  • Allow ratins and reviews from buyers
  • Allow ratins and reviews from all

As for me, I always look at the rating before buying any product. If I see a low rating, I will think twice before sending money. Yes, a low rating does not affect the visibility of the game, but I am sure it greatly affects the number of sales.

In that case, how about making it visually clear whether someone has purchased the game—for paid products only?

That way, help clarify whether someone is leaving criticism after supporting the creator financially, or just freely complaining without contributing anything.
