UPDATE: You inspired me to make a blog post and post it permanently on top of the descriptions of both of my games, talking about my stance on AI art and how these games do not represent me anymore. You can find that blog post here.

I'm considering making a notice or something on the game itself because I feel like this doesn't represent my current opinions on the subject. When I made the game, the most early AI art models had just released, and had this imperfect, surreal look to them. As a computer scientist, I was fascinated by what it could do, and since this game (along with Cohabitation) was made for a school project with a development cycle of only a couple of months, I decided to use that art because I felt it complimented my surreal game quite well. Since then, it has become much more clear that these models are trained by stealing art (and the models that have came out after the one I used are much more obvious about that).

So now I am left with some options. I could delete the game, since I feel like it doesn't represent me anymore, but from some of the comments and private reviews I know it means a lot to people, so I don't want to do that. I think my current decision is to never use AI art again, a decision I made clear whenever this discourse has come up before. I am an artist (my second side hobby is making webcomics) and my next game will be worked on in conjunction with many of my artist friends. Because I am an artist the concerns about stealing art matter a lot to me, and I understand the worries of you and everyone else who has commented here. Between these ethics concerns, which were not made clear to me back in the day, and the complete lack of anything interesting from new AI models, I don't think it has anything to offer to my work anymore.

Thank you for your feedback, I agree with you that oftentimes the point of a piece of art is the skill that goes into it. I hope to bring that point across in my next game :)

This is an excellent response. I second that you shouldn't delete the game, but it's good to acknowledge what happened and how you'll change that going forward.

I can see this truly means a lot to you and the response is very appreciated. I definitely think that you should leave this game up as well, I look forward to what's to come!

Wow. That is the dumbest thing I have read in a long time. AI just like cameras, programming languages, digital art softwares, are all merely advanced science that allows us to create cool art. I’m not gonna write more than this. It is so dumb to hate on AI anything when it’s

not

harming anyone. This is ART. If you don’t get it just leave.

It's harmless because it doesn't actually harm anyone, but art is beautiful because it is made with hard work. A landscape in nature isn't made by anyone, but it's still beautiful. But a landscape isn't art, because it wasn't designed by us. A painting of a landscape IS art, because the colors were carefully designed to match the artists observations of nature, and that is beautiful. AI is designed by humans, but the work it produces was not made directly by humans. If someone used an AI to recreate the Mona Lisa down to the exact atom of the wood canvas, it still wouldn't be a true piece of art like the original. If a person made a sculpture to resemble Mona Lisa, that would be a testament to the original, and although it is art it shouldn't replace the original. Does that make sense? I don't want artists to replace their own work with using AI as a tool, I want to see works created with their own hands, created by going out into the world and observing it for themselves.

I understand you but I don’t think AI is replacing human art, if anything it is enhancing it! And as you said AI was created by humans and the art it creates is not a single human’s art but the collective artistic hive like human mind that creates it. Not the art of 1 human but the art of humanity. That’s what is amazing about AI art to me, and I believe it is art. To me at least. The concept of art is relative. To me anything that exists through a human perspective can be art. Just like the colours of galaxies, stars, quantum physics, animals, etc. Nothing cancels anything. Art can be A, but it doesn’t mean it can’t also be B, or C, or &, or *648H, etc. I hope that makes sense.

After reading this 4 times, I just realized something new. I was mixing beauty with art. For something to be beautiful it doesn’t have to be art. Good example with nature. I need to rethink my stand on art. Although the topic was AI Art.

That's what I call character development! Thanks for taking the time to analyze my post, I hope to be a writer some day. I'll try to make my position clear in addition to illustrating my points from now on, but I'm glad you liked my examples. Thanks again for rethinking your position, it takes a lot of courage to investigate your beliefs in order to get stronger!
