Great concept and good use of the theme and limitations. Was fun a bit dark but good over all.

The only issue I came across was the water that would hit the player did nothing in my build? I wasn't sure if it was supposed to hurt you but it did nothing when I played

Again! fun game good ideas. Good job!

Developer

Huh that's weird, did the water just go through you? It takes some health away, but it takes some hits before you actually see some effect from multiple hits. When your flamebody turns red and get hit you should die. Thanks for playing and giving feedback.

Disclaimer: I fully understand this is a game jam game not everything can be done but even then I give very "tough" feedback so if you can't handle that kind of "criticism" it's ok just don't read my message.

While it was an alright atmosphere, the levels were a little too dark to actually see what's going on.
The respawn mechanic is an interesting concept but flawed execution as having to backtrack from one end to the other to relit that one random torch/candle/something can prove to be quite the task and also not really intuitive in contrast to having the last lit one be the one that went out and while I do see that happen sometimes, a bug (I think it's one atleast) happens where that last one is relit anyways as soon or just when you are about to respawn without doing anything which ends up causing a light soft lock in the 3rd level.
The cage's metal sound can get kind of obnoxious and is kind of loud so be careful with that.
Instead of having to press escape then restart level everytime you could make a keybind for restarting the level instead

That is all I hae to say for now, interesting concept, alright atmosphere, it's not bad.

I don't mind though feedback and appreciate you taking the time to give extensive feedback. The criticism you make are valid points.

Yeah the random torches going out I think is fine in the smaller levels but on the last level it's more of a nuisance than a fun game mechanic. I think the mechanic would be fine if the whole level fits on one screen and you can relatively easily relight the torch without having to backtrack.

Thanks for playing

That was nice. I like the mechanics and gameplay. The atmosphere and everything were tied together nicely. I like how you set up the initial levels to teach how the game works. I would have liked some UI or something to tell the player how much health/number of fireballs they have left. Also, a prompt to break out at the start of the level would help direct players a bit. I also want to say that the levels might have been just a little too dark. But I'm just being picky lol. Really good game! Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing. In hindsight it was indeed a bit too dark, I was going for moody but overdid it a bit too much :)

I enjoyed the aesthetics of the game, it was a little confusing what I was suppose to do at first, and I got stuck on the 2nd and 3rd level and had to die..? (unsure if intentional)

I also died on the 3rd level and got stuck in some kind of death loop, dying to the flame above a pit, and then falling into the pit over and over.

An interesting idea though, just was a bit confused if I was playing right and was meant to die on some levels haha

Developer(+1)

The dying was intentional. It's meant to learn the player that when you die you spawn at your last hit torch. I wanted to create a game with very few on screen text and let the player experiment, perhaps I went a little overboard :)

The death loop on the third level was definitely a bug. You can always skip a level by pressing escape and go to the next stage or use the stage selector on the main menu.

Thanks for taking the time to download and play my game.

Gotcha, yeah, I enjoy minimalistic UI and not too much handholdy text, and it looks good aesthetically, it is hard to get the balance right though.

I didn't realize I could skip levels haha, but noted to look for that one in the future!

Overall, I still really liked the aesthetic, the atmosphere felt really good I just think I could have done with a little more guidance, to make sure I didn't feel like I was "cheesing" the levels.

Twas a fun game!

That was fun and super spooky. You did really well on the lighting, it made me feel apprehensive and hesitant. Very nice atmosphere. The particle effects were magnificent. Shooting that fireball was so satisfying. The sound effects and background music were applied really well to enhance the immersion. Great jam!

Developer

thanks for playing and taking the time to download it. Happy to hear you liked the atmosphere.
