I like driving the little rover around the colony, but the base runs out of energy too quickly, poor solar panels can't keep up.

solar panels only gather energy in daylight; don't bother visiting them until the "sun" has been out for a bit :) frankly, you should only need to retrieve energy and return it to the base once to complete the demo at a generally leisure pace (then again, i've been "playing" it for a couple of weeks, right?). otherwise, i apologize for the frustration you might have experienced but thank you for trying it out :)
