Artist statement
Loop Synth is a sound toy designed to be used for music composition and live performance. (Updates may take place as feedback comes in)

Note: Reverb (Space) and Pan (on Wood and Steel) only work on Mac and Windows applications.

The interface: is divided into three sections: Faders, The Loop Wheel, and Sounds.

1. Drag and drop sounds into the loop to hear sounds (Touch and mouse)

2. Position the sounds to make a drum sequence.

3. Adjust volume, speed, pitch, pan, and reverb as desired.

Advanced info: The dots on the loop give a rough indication of different time signatures. You can use the circles (4/4, 4/8...), hexagons (5/4), and triangles (3/4) as guides.

Synth-like features: Use combinations of time signatures, pitch and high speed to create new sounds and harmonies.

When I realized I wasn't bound to some specific spots for placing my sounds, I went  \o/ I had a lot of fun playing around with this one, it's pretty clearly labeled and the things that aren't are still very easy to figure out

This sound toy has sound icons on the right that can be dragged and dropped into the path of an orbiting circle in the middle, which acts as a trigger when it hits them. It’s not very precise and I’m not sure how to get a screen reader to work with it. I’ll have a look into it and see if it’s possible or at least start my next project with this in mind. Thank you for your comment.

By the way, I took part in a game jam specifically for blind gamers last year. I made a game with a 3D environment to navigate called Lifeforms. It was my first attempt and probably not that great, but there were some really cool submissions, I’ll add the link just in case you missed it. Link to games for blind gamers 2

Thanks for letting us watch this project grow over the jam. It’s wildly fun, especially when stretching it toward soundscapes and textures that no longer sound like a drum machine. The visuals are very polished as well. Occasionally I can break it, but that’s part of the fun. I hope this does well on the app store. Nice work!

Thank you for hosting the jam and taking the time to play all the ‘instruments’!

Nice, as someone who knows nothing about drums or even rhythm the simple colors and small amount of sounds-with-many-options made it very easy to use. It's also beautiful to look at.

Thank you Perfect C!

The new update is great! Thanks for considering my feedback. The amount of customization available from all the new settings lets you create so many different sounds and textures from eight simple samples.

Check out this stream from stratifarm, starting around 1:11, for a pretty in-depth playtest and jam session: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2026995494

That’s amazing! That guy really pushed it to the limits! Made me crack up :) unfortunately the reverb and pan doesn’t work on WebGL and there are a few bugs with saving that I need to sort out,  hopefully get back to it next week. Anyway, thank you for all the ideas and for hosting the jam! Great fun!

Yes! It was a very funny stream. I especially enjoyed when it started sounding like we were in a space station. Good luck with the changes!

Nice work so far! This is a really simple and fun tool to experiment with drum polyrhythms. Here’s one I made that’s 2 over 3 over 5 over 8:

You mentioned that you’re still working on this, so here’s a few wishlist items, hopefully without making it too complex:

  • I wish I could place more than nine of each sound.
  • I wish there were more guides to help me align sounds, or if there was quantization at some highly-composite value like 1/60th notes.
  • I wish I could switch between multiple loops.
  • I wish I could control the volume of individual notes.
  • I wish I could clear all the notes of a particular sound.
  • I don’t know if there’s a way to make this accessible to folks who can’t use a mouse or see the screen, but it might be nice to play sounds or announce to screen readers when hovering over notes.

I’m not sure if you’ve joined the Discord server, but you may ask us for feedback there as well. Cheers!

Also! I noticed that your devlog link should be edited. Try https://redninja83882493.wordpress.com.

Thank you for the ideas and encouragement! Impressive polyrhythm set up too! I'll do my best to grant some of your wishes :) Thanks for the invite to Discord. I decided I don't get on too well with Discord a couple of game jams back, so for the moment, I'll just stick to Itch.

You’re welcome, and best of luck with any changes you make before the jam ends and beyond!

I completely understand your hesitation with Discord. I think we chatted a bit during Games for Blind Gamers 2. That community is great! And your submission was super interesting and against the grain! But in general I’ve felt overwhelmed by Discord over the past few years, specifically the 24/7 availability it expects from me, and how exposed it can make me to things I’m not expecting as a very private solo game developer. It can be really stressful! So please prioritize yourself over anything else, with no pressure.

Tomorrow I’ll be starting a 96-hour sprint to add a walking simulator to my submission, so you might see some updates from me. Cheers!
