We now have a Steam Page and will be releasing a new and improved version of the game on Friday, October 3rd! Axol's Quest on Steam
This is an RPG materpice!
It teaches you how to play an RPG in case it´s your first time playing one, it doesn´t use rpg maker assets and all the sprites are original
The animations are very fluid, the characters are very endearing, the story is simple but very good and you don´t expect the plot twist at the end
You can see this is made with love, very very good game
i liked the game good art good game but cant get over bridges sometimes 👍
During my first play session, I found it surprising how quickly I came to regard the game as a complete release rather than a jam entry. The visuals, narrative, and gameplay systems are as fleshed out as I would expect in a full release. The charming yet foreboding undertones gave the game an Undertale-like appeal, which paired well with the cartoony visuals.
The amount of variety in the visuals is extremely impressive for jam entry as well! The character portraits adopting different poses depending on their attack or status was an excellent touch! I especially liked Brando's knocked out sprite.
Some issues are unfortunately persistent, however. The earlier game areas are loaded with explorable areas which began to feel like they were detracting rather than adding. It became difficult to progress in the plot at times since it was difficult to know if an area would lead to progress or another item pickup. The added exploration is a positive overall, but I feel it could have been curtailed somewhat in order to sustain a brisker pace.
One major frustration I had was the crab rave attack's sudden and harsh visuals. I understand that they're meant to overwhelming, but I was genuinely concerned that the game might require a photosensitivity warning after shielding my eyes from it for the third time (I don't suffer from epilepsy as far as I know. It just made my eyes hurt).
Apart from those negatives, this game has enough charm and depth that I'd genuinely expect to find it as a complete, paid for release. If the exploration aspects could be reeled in somewhat and the visuals could be better tested to prevent instances of eye strain, I think the game could be even better! Excellent overall!
Just completed this game in an entire day! Its a great short (around 4 hour) RPG! For this thing being in a game jam it has a lot more than I was expecting!
Here are my positives!
However there is some problems I have with the game.
Over all this is a great little RPG that has heart and great ideas and more potential that i think even the developers know... If your bored and have some time to kill this is definitely a good way to do so.
Alright. Alright alright alright alright alright alright alright.
This is no exaggeration to say. But SWEET MOTHER OF BARNACLES AND TARTAR SAUCE, WAS THIS MADE IN A MONTH?!!! Holy tsunami captain this game. This game... This game.......... This game should be a commercial game. This isn't meant to be a product for a game jam entry. The scope is FAR FAAAARRRRRR too large. This is a 4+ hour non-human JRPG holy macaroni. (Technically this could be reduced to a 2.5-3 hours if you don't get sidetracked/grind (or if you're searching for the currency for unlocking team attacks) like me but regardless this game is still very very long.)
You actually bamboozled me with this entry. The screenshots, descriptions and everything from the page actually LIED to you.
Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you very much for making this game. This game is, in my personal tastes and opinion, one of the greatest RPG Maker games I have played. And this is no exaggeration to say because I rarely say this to any game. This is my favourite game in all the entries I have played including games outside of the jam.
That being said, this game isn't a perfect 10/10. But honestly I only give 9+/10 to only the greatest of RPG Maker games that I cherish with all my heart. And I gave this a 9.2/10. My highest rpg maker game I've played and ranked in my lifetime is 8.8-9.1 at best. So take this with the biggest badge of honor you will receive because I am granting you the greatest kudos I can give you. Let me give you a full checklist as to why I grant this honor to this game first before I describe the critical parts of this game that could be problems.
Honestly, these are cliff notes. I literally could have more things to say about this game. I spent so much time traversing through it and while I am physically fatigued, my soul is incredibly happy that I experienced every last orifice of this game's world to its fullest. Now let's get to the bullet point of things I didn't like or critical points.
And these are my points that I can give you. At least the spoiler free version (and this is straining for me to do in order to not give away as much as I can. Because I want people to play this blind and judge for themselves).
Honestly, if I had money, I'd donate to this game. This game is THAT good for me.
Once again, you have made me the happiest person alive with this game. I humbly appreciate this masterpiece of a contribution you gave to this jam and to me. I'm so glad I get to experience this in my lifetime. I will definitely support this game with a commemoration fanart if I ever get the opportunity.
Thank you very much. Truly. You are a magnificent developer. Good bizzle to you as well.
Thanks so much for this review, it means a lot! I'm really glad you enjoyed the game, we put a lot of love into it. We're thinking about doing an updated release sometime down the line making changes and additions based on some of the feedback we've gotten, so keep an eye out for that. This game was a thrilling experience for me, working with a team of likeminded artists to create something that went beyond expectations, and I'm really happy with how it turned out given the time frame. So yeah, thanks again so much for your engagement, it is much appreciated!
And it genuinely shows. Your team did an excellent job with this. I'm glad you're planning to update things for the game as well. That might bump my impressions immensely to 9.5 if these issues were fixed. I don't know what changes you will add but my recommendation for the battles is a faster QOL animation option, but that's more a personal take and nitpick. I'll leave that up to you to decide.
Once again, I am grateful your team made this. Thank you.
