So, my first completed game was one i was hired to work on in high school and that company still owns that IP. I also only worked on it as an artist, so i didn't get to influence the design or coding. It still holds a special place in my heart though, and it's the game i'd like to revamp.

That said, I can't remake it verbatim or distribute the game itself. Is it cool if i link to where you can get the game, and then do something that's loosely inspired by the it so i don't upset the other developers?

Yeah, that will be fine. You can do a loose remake or a work inspired by it as long as it does not infringe upon the rights holders
