A bit confusing but fun! Somehow the game thinks I have lettuce so it won't let me get it but I don't have any

An adorable li’l quest of sorts! I really liked the aesthetics of the character, but it definitely felt like there was a mismatch between assets (characters, interface, items, backgrounds). I’m not sure how typical that is for Point & Click games, and it does give it the feel of an old kid’s PBS morning cartoon, but it still feels jarring from a gameplay perspective. I would’ve loved to see the whole game with a unified aesthetic.

As for the gameplay, it was mostly straightforward (which is not a problem as it really hits the cozy dynamic). I think having more books, or having to flip between pages would help, but for a jam game that feels so cozy, it’s very cohesive in terms of gameplay.

I would really like to see an episodic take to this, again similar to a kid’s PBS morning cartoon, as I could really see the li’l witch going to school, gardening, or just helping out the neighbors with her brews and potions! Would even give a reason for the bookshelf to have more interactable books as the game went on. She could even have one of those “pocket sized” encyclopedias to have access to items when on the go.

Yes, there are some bugs.

The game is sufficient.

Why is the girl green and cute?

Hello! First, I'd like to say that the idea of the game is cute and cozy. I'll point out some issues, yet I think the game has potential.

Inventory:

  • After using the banana in a recipe, it didn't disappear from the inventory. I loaded the game again and then the same issue happened with the apple.
  • I tried to give the mysterious item to the mother, but the icon item didn't disappear from the cursor; it got stuck during the rest of the game.

Interaction:

  • The trash in the inventory didn't work. Every time I clicked the icon, the character would move instead.
  • The "make" button didn't work at first; I had to exit and click the cauldron again.

Gameplay:

  • I got stuck several times. While being in the kitchen, sometimes it wouldn't let me move the character or open the inventory. I could only click the vegetables book and the cauldron.
  • I couldn't pass the first recipe. In the description of the game, the recipes are written (which I appreciate a lot, lol). But while executing the first recipe inside the game, it ended up with a "mysterious item" as the final product. I tried changing the amount and order of the ingredients, but the result was always the same.

Visuals and Graphics:

  • I like the graphics, especially how the main character is drawn. But I don't feel all the assets in the game match. I can see the idea of mixing different art styles between the characters and the backgrounds, but I feel they need to blend better with each other.

Thanks for playing and giving me feedback, I apologize for the stuff that didn't work! I thought I got most of the bugs through this update but wow, there's still so many things to work out! Thanks for taking the time to list them, I appreciate it!

Great game! Interesting idea and definitely can be expanded upon. Here is some improvement that I can think off the top of my head:

  • Maybe a recipe book that you can go inside and fill however you want with your inventory, this can be fun and will probably go well with the theme you are going with
  • Other methods or tools that affect food rather than just putting them in a cauldron, this can open much more possibilities, also you can make these methods related to witches as well
  • New books to discover along with gameplay possibly with other things than just ingredients, maybe new tools to pick up on books and stuff
  • Also some little particle effects and stuff can help making game more cozy

Hope these ideas help. I would love to see an improved game with this cozy art and a very nice theme :)

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Wait ...  a beautifully hand-drawn cozy game?! Hold my Banana-Apple-Smoothy!

It's a nice, simple game - perfect for leaning back and having some cozy time! It also  gave me such good memories of one of our Jams where we created some similar  game (if you want to check it out, me was creating the game art: https://flavedogame.itch.io/cook-slap-run)

There are some bugs that made me get stuck. But after some back-and-forth with the Exit/Cauldron button they went by.

Thank you for your entry - really enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for the comments and playing!
I love the art for your game, so cute! It's like Monsters Inc. meets Overcooked!
Sorry about the bugs! I thought I cleared them all but I did add stuff last minute that might've screwed with it...!
