Description
The Night's Abyss is an RPG about a boy named Dante's adventure to save his brother Yuri from himself. Yuri has fled reality and isolated himself in a world of dreams. Can you bring your brother back from the depths of his mind's abyss?

I use Ableton. It's got kind of a hip hop sound to it.

Once you enter the dreamscape, you plunge further and further underwater, eventually reaching the abyssal plane. There you encounter the nightmare - a manifestation of Yuri's anxieties that caused him to flee the real world. You battle it and he comes to terms with reality. Also there's an item shop somewhere along your journey.

Message from the artist:
Enjoy!

Theme:

Runaway

How does it fit the theme?
Yuri is running away from reality.

Very cool soundtrack, relaxing, then scarie in the Nightmare Approachs and dynamic in Fight on. Great work!

What a great feel in all tracks! I love the underwater item shop, such a great loop, haha. Really kicker fighting theme, too. I also like the old school vibe of the instruments. Great job!

Wow, you have some really nice and chill tracks! I particularly like tracks 1 until 3! Truly "dreamy".

The brass in Fight On! kind of sounds like the brass in Ashes on the Fire from Attack on Titan lol.

Underwater Item Shop is fantastic! 😁

Dante's Theme - Well executed theme.

Enter the Dreamscape - Oh this is great. It gives me a very wibbly wobbly feeling. It almost reminds me a bit of the Vortex world in Sam & Max hit the road. Cool! This one is probably my favourite.

Underwater Item Shop - Definitely got that shop vibe.

Abyssal Plane - This one has a nice air of mystery as well. I like the theremin/flute-like sound.

The Nightmare Approaches - Nice ambient soundscape you got going here. It definitely builds up to something big.

Fight On! - This seems like a pretty strong tonal shift from the Nightmare Approaches. It's a really cool boss battle theme though.

Closure - It seems now that we've defeated the boss, the nightmare has turned into a dream :)

Great soundtrack!

Thanks sai'ke! The tonal shift from the nightmare approaches to fight on was partly intentional, I intended for it to be the build up to when the final boss approaches and then of course the final encounter.

I absolutely love Abyssal Plane! The atmosphere feels melancholic, and the bits of piano throughout just adds so much to it. Nice work!

Really enjoyed the first track, and the crackling sound-- reminds me ever so slightly of Everywhere at the End of Time. Definitely a cool groove and a good opening, with some nice attention to detail as well.

Track 2: Love the quartal harmony! This track does a good job of establishing the mystical, dreamy feel of the game. Beautiful flowy synths, cool chords... would be a good song to study to, I think! The constant addition of cool new chords really keeps this track sounding interesting.

Track 3: Lovely tone shift! Definitely a more upbeat track with a cute little melody.

Tracks 4 and 5 are both quality, but I really love track 5-- this is one of the most suspenseful tracks I've heard yet in this whole jam. Really amazing job, and it gets you hyped up for the fight track!

Track 6: quintessential hip-hop fight music. Love it! Really good job of creating a high-energy track.

Track 7: Mario Galaxy vibes!

You did an excellent job of telling a compelling story and creating a unique, beautiful world (right down to the awesome coverart.) this was a great soundtrack, keep writing!

I really enjoyed listening to your OST so I listened to it a second time through and wanted to offer more in-depth comments because you obviously put a lot of work into this and deserve to be recognized for it!

Dante’s Theme: This opening piano solo is so serene. I love the lo-fi vibe that’s added to it. I wonder if the ending note is intentional or if it’s meant to be loopable. It sounds like it could be looped, in which case I would definitely want to keep listening to this theme over and over! I think you have a nice harmonic balance too that keeps the chords interesting and not too bright or too dark.

Enter the Dreamscape: The “wah” effect is really nice. I’m noticing that a lot of the mixing seems to be shifted toward one side (unless my it’s just my headphones) which I think adds to the lilting effect.

Underwater Item Shop: I love the addition of a musical “rest stop” just like in an actual game where you can take a minute away from the epic story line to just buy some healing items or a pack of gum or whatever. :) On top of that, this is a solid underwater item shop theme and I would have pictured that even if it wasn’t the title. Excellent imagery-composing with this one!

Abyssal Plane: This brooding progression fits imagery of an underwater abyss. I love the melody-writing in this one and the interplay between the echoey and watery instrumentation. The steady rhythm has a unique sound like you recorded it (did you?) but quickly moves to the background to create an awesome effect with the watery instrumentation and the bass vamp in the foreground.

The Nightmare Approaches: What a build-up!

Fight On!: Love that beat! I am dancing in my seat as I type this listening to this track. This is one track where I think the static sound maybe interfered a little with the musicality and I would have opted to turn it down a hair, but it doesn’t detract from how much of a jam this one is!

Closure: I’m just imagining Dante and Yuri resting together maybe on the beach once they return from the adventure. This feels very peaceful and is a good end-game song. I love that reverberant neo-soul/lofi electronic piano sound- it’s just so calming. It would be great if this one could loop or maybe have an extended cadence as the ending seemed to come sooner than I wanted!

Overall: Wow this would be a fun game to play! You definitely kept to the central theme of your game and it all sounds very unified which gets major kudos from me! I love your sound and think you’re composition is stellar with top-notch musical picture-painting. Sometimes the record static felt a little too forward and maybe got distracting, but on the flipside, it definitely gives your OST a unique sound. Great work and thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks!!!!! The first track's melody ends on an unresolved note because I wanted to emphasize the beginning of the journey. I definitely agree about the mixing on the second track, I could've balanced the levels a bit better heh. The drums on abyssal plain (i only realized my typo after i submitted lel) are heavily modified from a sample of real drums. The static on fight on is definitely a bit excessive, but we'll just call it a stylistic choice. Thanks again for the kind words and for taking time out to write this!
