Description
An FM-heavy, high-paced homage to arcade action games, this 'Runaway' OST is more about the title than the picture.
Made entirely in Deflemask via the YM2151 + Sega PCM setup, there is a title track, a menu jam, and then the more somber credit roll theme. Thanks for listening!
Theme:
Runaway
How does it fit the theme?
More the high-paced feel that can go along with the title.

This whole OST really kept me on my toes. I love how energetic it is without being annoying. Awesome bounce in the Menu Theme. Nice work!
Awwesoooome!! That one minute mark goes so hard. I love the frantic and seemingly-random but actually highly intricate string of rapid fire notes beneath the melody. Could pull double duty as a boss theme.
Your whole production style is a real treat to listen to. This is an entry where I can vividly picture the style of the game. Not necessarily what the player is doing but how it looks and feels to play. Flashy, action-packed, heroic, and lovingly old school. Wish I could play it!
Aw, thanks hoss. Glad you seemed to enjoy it!
I love the mix of FM sounds with voice samples, you really have a lot of talent for this style of music, I can tell you have experience with this equipment. If you had had the time to run it all through a DAW and refine the sound it would be more enjoyable, especially with the extreme highs, but otherwise excellent work!
For sure! I (should have) learned this lesson last time lol and did do more to balance the sounds in the original mix, but I really need to carve out at least an hour to mix it in a daw after the fact next time around!
For the Title theme, the high frequencies do feel loud, but I read ur reply to juzek and I understand that you had time constraints.
My favourite might be the Main Theme! It feels so Sonic! Along with the voice clips, sounds like it came from Sonic CD lol.
Totally fair point. I think ear fatigue also played a factor after playing it so many times over. Sonic definitely is a huge influence, though, so thank you listening!
Love the sampling! Added lots of excitement. Love the differences in moods, after the first two more aggressive tracks, the chill track was a nice change. Gives me Genesis vibes overall, reminds me of Sonic tracks!
these tracks are FULL!
Great melodies and songs. My only complaint is a personal preference. I think I need to get crummier headphones, cause all the super high frequencies in the Title Theme, kinda hurt my ears. (sawtooth waves?). I actually ran it through a low-pass filter, and now I love it.
No, I totally feel you. There's a lot of grit in the FM patches I used, especially on that track, and it was hard for me to tell what was too much / just right, especially because I was away and working through a pair of average headphones myself.
Really wanted to spend some time importing them from the tracker and properly mixing everything in a DAW, but next thing you know it's Sunday and time to submit ha. Oh well, but I'll try it through a LPF and fiddle with that next time I need to clean up some stuff like that. Thanks for listening and your feedback!
Ah man I loved this! I love FM sounds, they're so chunky and they're used so well here! Absolutely incredible work, I loved how heavy the title track was, the funkiness of the menu theme (which was also pretty damn heavy) and the chill vibe of the credits.
Thanks for listening, boss! Def think heavy funk is pretty much my wheelhouse, so no surprise there. I just can't resist haha.
Track 1: This is really hardcore, I love it! You've done an excellent job of capturing the arcade action sound with excellent synths. The thunder at the end was also super cool!
Track 2: The 'YUH!' is so cool! Even though it's short, there is so much attention to detail with this track. I am once again super impressed!
Track 3: Getting Top Gun vibes from this... really love it! This exactly captures the vibe you were going for. Really a big fan of this work, keep writing!
Thank you for listening to everything! Love to hear the Top Gun connection: would love for the track to serve as the backdrop to forbidden love haha.
Ooh, nice. I really love the energy in this.
I really like that OOH vocal in the menu theme. It makes me think of the beat-em-ups of yore. The menu theme is definitely my favorite. I really love how it has that little repeating speedup. Awesome.
Overall a good album. I love all of the soundtracks!
Love having some more Genesis-esque stuff in this Jam! Feels like a game I would've played back in the early 90's, great job!
That menu theme is tight! Nice job!
WOOOW ! The 8bit energy is mad !! I was sent in the 80s listening to this ! I'd say maybe, use 8bit drums too, the open hats sounds a bit out of place.
Congrats !!
thanks man! Not sure which hats stood out — they all get processed in the same way — but some aren't as bit crushed as others, so something I'll try to be more aware of in the future. Thanks for listening!
