Nice review! Thanks!

Actually, when the guards say "huh?" that's the warning, but of course without a learn sounds feature you wouldn't know that without trial and error...  Also I think the problem with guard footsteps is that when there are two of them the audio ends up syncing perfectly and causing the positioning to sound off, so a delay between them would be helpful.

You may be interested to know that the egg break consists mainly of well, an egg cracking, but also a pepper being broken and a tomato being crushed, along with a designed bone crack and zombie bite.

You’re welcome. The entire experience was really well done.

I also heard the footsteps phasing in and out like that. Maybe it’d be feasible to create more samples, of different lengths and pitches, and assign them randomly to each guard in the code, so that wouldn’t happen as frequently.

I actually think the “huh?” cue is pretty successful in communicating danger. I would die maybe 50% of the time after hearing it, probably just moving into the wrong place at the wrong time. To clarify, I was thinking of more of a “sixth sense” cheat mechanic like a low buzz coming from the closest guard before they say anything, so you can avoid their detection radius entirely. It’d make the game a little easier for folks who need it.

It’s so cool to learn about your foley process. The egg hatching sound was my favorite thing I heard in the jam. All the layers are mixed and morphed together in a way that you can’t even pick out the individual sounds.

As the unwanted passengers on a futuristic space transport we must stealthily follow the coos of our alien mother to safety. Unlike most games with an echolocation mechanic, her response to our cries emerge from our exit, which between us may lie a twisted path of lethal obstacles.

Each of its six levels are well designed and paced with a steady difficulty curve. In its first level we learn how to move and simply follow our mother to the exit. After that, each level introduces further challenges like guards, traps, and walls to navigate around. Even with so few basic tools, by its final level what they build is quite complex and challenging.

The sound design succeeds in reinforcing its interstellar setting. Our mother sounds like none other. Its levels are peppered with vibrant machines that beep and churn. Their floors feel grated and metallic, as if lifted verbatim from the industrial architecture of the Alien franchise. Accidentally tripping the guards leads to a gruesome collage of gunfire and death. And when we hatch again it’s otherworldly and so corporeal it’s almost sickening.

At times I found it difficult to get past its guards. Specifically, I found that it was difficult to ascertain whether their footsteps were coming from ahead or behind me. Perhaps some filtering could reduce the brightness of the footsteps behind us so we know what’s up ahead. Similarly, the inclusion of a cheat mode is quite helpful for sighted folks, but what might improve its usefulness is an audio cue that indicates when we’re in danger of being spotted.

Thanks for your submission. Good work!

Thanks for this complete review !! and kind words ;) You’re right about your comments, and some point like the danger 6th sense was on todo list, but I miss some time at the end of the jam. Superfreq has already done the sound, so It will certainly come with a post jam version of the game ;) And a big thanks for hosting this jam, I learn so much in this adventure.
