I really enjoyed the concept, and Fred and Gary were great characters. I haven't completed the story yet, as I got a bit impatient... sometimes I was missing just one or two words but they wouldn't change due to the RNG. Great use of the theme though! I definitely plan to return to this one. Nice work!

The writing in this is really smart and fun. I love the lore of this world of animals you've created that are living in the world like how humans do. There's a lot of truth to honest mundanity here that when applied to animals is very charming and funny. Love Gary staying over because he's having marital problems haha.  Unfortunately I ran into a game-stopping bug halfway through but the time I spent with it was entertaining. Great job!

Oooh shoot sorry about that! If you want to just get to see the dialogue for the later days you could maybe use the cheat button to get back to where you were, unless the bug is unavoidable. Would you mind sharing what it was so I can fix it for post jam updates?

Very glad you enjoyed it though! ^_^

Love the art style! Especially underwater - Fred's oozing personality with just a still image (and not to mention he's got a pretty great name). Fascinated with the concept of transcribing human speech as well, though unfortunately it doesn't always play as well as it should. The colours were easy enough to figure out without direction, but it's difficult to focus on the words when they keep jumping around. I suppose it's inevitable unless the different words are more or less the same length. I would consider cutting out the 'best fit' option for normal conversation, at least. I hope to see this one polished one day as I think it has great potential. Maybe have the protagonist attempt to communicate with the humans or use his knowledge in some other way? Keep it up!

(Also cut Gary some slack, jeez)

Thank you for the feedback, very glad you enjoyed it ^_^ yeah the word size jumping around was an issue I was struggling with. I think I made it a little better by setting a minimum size for the word objects but it's tough when you're trying to put words like "I" and "amphibious" into the same space...

Really charming dialog in this! I loved how dry and sarcastic the frog was. The little details about the frog world were wonderful too. Like the evenly distributed limbs or the fact that Fred was reading Moby Dick, some great writing there!!

With the deciphering mini game... a very interesting concept! At the moment though, it felt like a little less of strategy and more of guess and check. I get the idea of what you were going for with the different colors, but it was a bit confusing to me at first with what color was the right color to go for... or if there was one?

After using cheat on the first phrase, I noticed that the second phrase had 2 words already blue, so that time I  tried for all the blue words, and that time I was successful! So I think having the "correct" dialog being hinted at is deffs a good idea for all the phrases to give the player more direction!

Also, two small things I felt could use tweaking.

First off, when Gary talks, it would be nice if he would stop moving, or at least if the dialog box would stop moving. The motion blur on it while it moved made reading a bit difficult, espeically if it moved while typing.

Also... while the music's simplicity complimented the simple but charming black and white art style, the amount of times it started and stopped (3-5 notes followed by rest) made the music kind of call attention to itself, which made it seem a bit distracting. With the amount of time spent with the soundtrack while deciphering the puzzle, I think the game would benefit from having something longer, and more flowing (maybe some held long notes or chords) to stretch out the soundtrack, make it sound more ambient, and make the looping less noticeable. :D

Hope these little notes help!

Ribbit ribbit! Well done with this jam!!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! For the mini game, it is a little guess and check unfortunately. The idea is after you get one or two lines of one color you get the mood of it and more easily recognize words that might be in that color, both on your own and since words start locking in from the start.

Completely agree for the music, honestly that's my bad for stubbornly insisting on recording it myself and then not practicing accordion for 2 years so I was a little rusty haha. But I could have done something simple and more fluid for sure, I was going for "hoppy".

Thank you so much for the feedback! It's very helpful ^_^
