The character movement is almost there I pretty like that wall jump just like in Celeste, the only thing holding this game back is the level design and difficulty spikes. Try easing in the difficulty of the levels, let players slowly learn your game and get a hang of the controls and timing before ramping up the challenge. Once you master creating and balancing your levels, art and music can come after. Great job! Keep up the good work.

Fun game! I kind of enjoyed how challenging the game was, and the theme of time was very apparent throughout. Some feedback regarding things I think could be improved on:

  • I think spikes should only be lethal when collided from the direction they're facing. There were a few times where I would accidentally die to spikes because I collided with them from the side going up. Two instances where this happened was the lone spike near the end of the game, and the second time when you have to wall slide down. The difficulty of these parts were fine though! Just that minor problem made it somewhat more difficult than I had imagined.
  • I beat the game without having much trouble with time. I think it would be much more of a challenge if there was a bit less leniency with the time, to encourage players to keep on their toes.
  • It would be nice if there was more control over the player's jumps. Sections like the wall jumping part near the end would benefit well with being able to "shorthop".

In the end, I think this game has a lot of potential since you have the framework of the mechanics down already, especially since it plays into the music. I would love to see how you evolve this concept with the music involved, because I haven't actually seen something like that done before!

Thank you very much for your feedback. There are a few things you mentioned, that i'm trying to fix right now, but there's something i didn't even think about until reading your post, thanks. And thanks for playing!

I know how it is to be a game dev on a deadline and have ideas of how to expand on a project, how it can be fixed or added to, etc. So please understand if I mention things you already want to fix or add.

1) Your general platforming feels solid. There isn't a lot of skidding when changing direction of movement, you slow down slightly when sliding down walls, and the game checks for inputs when you're about to touch the ground. The limited number of walljumps is a system that's easy to understand after a few goes experimenting with it, maybe not very well conveyed upfront though.

1a) Walljumping by holding the direction the wall is in works fine. Walljumping doesn't work if you're standing alongside the wall, and it doesn't work if you press jump in tandem with holding the opposite direction - so if you try to walljump away from the wall, you end up falling uselessly downward. You have to walljump towards the wall, and then veer back, which can eat away the momentum you need to reach the opposite wall in time. Since there is an input buffer for checking the jump button before touching the floor, there should be a similar buffer when the player is not overlapping a platform/wall, where the player isn't affected by gravity for a few frames, while the game looks for jumping inputs. It would be ideal to have the game detect if the player is pressing jump while they're mid-air up against a wall, and have them automatically jump in the opposite direction, the same result as the player holding the opposite direction from the wall while trying to walljump

1b) Also, I really feel that walljump count should be bumped up to 4 at the very least. Either that or those walljump-restoring gems should respawn in place after a short time. Because of everything mentioned above, it's very finicky doing challenges that use up all the walljumps, even with the gems restoring them

1c) A more forgiving hitbox would be much appreciated, especially on the castle parapets-themed level with spikes lining all the walls. Checkpoints would also be much appreciated. Though, I feel like these are things you wanted to implemented but didn't have time before the deadline

2) The intro level (the hub??) doesn't seem to follow the same rules as the levels do when it comes to the music acting as a timer, so the first level restarting after a quick audio fade-out almost seemed like a bug at first. It caught me off-guard, anyway. It's difficult because I want to suggest something like 'a text prompt explaining the mechanic' but that betrays the point of using the audio, which is to NOT rely on text to convey the timer. Having a game with no HUD can be an artistic choice that pays off if everything is still reworked to be clearly understood. At the very least, I'd like if it the music faded in a little at the beginning when the timer resets the level. It's a sudden audio jump that doesn't really help the presentation

4) As I mentioned above, I do like the audio mechanic! That and the general lack of UI clutter give the game an interesting experience to get immersed into. Since the game would have to lack an options menu, save-file screens etc to keep up the aesthetic, maybe it would be better for a Deluxe version to have a separate .exe for handling saves and resolution/sound settings, control settings and the like

Currently the game feels like it belongs in the 'rage' subgenre of platformers, which really contrasts against the audiovisual presentation. Maybe that's an intentional contrast you can capitalise on? Regardless, it's a good start for a platformer but it really needs to shine and stand out more in some form of fashion. Look at what we have at the moment (narrative, mechanics, level design, etc) and see what can be changed to make it more outstanding, since things like "good graphics" or "good story" or "a levelling system/skill tree" aren't really unique selling points - hundreds of games have them. What makes your game (potentially) one of a kind? What can be iterated upon? Whether that's really working on the UI-less presentation, or finding more ways to integrate audio mechanics

Sorry for replying so late, i had some issues with computer. Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated.

For the most part, i didn't add a lot of things you mentioned, because i didn't have much time left, yes. And due to the fact that it was my first game, there were a lot of things i was doing for the first time: for example, drawing sprites or adding sounds in game, or working with 2d in general, previosly i was working with 3d only.

1) Thanks, i was trying a lot of different stuff, when i was working on movement, because i tried to make it feels to control the character as pleasant as possible, and i spent to much time time on that, so i had to go with what i've got and move on to the different things. I was gonna add effect that would appear after 3rd jump to tell a player, that it was his last jump, and when the player would land, another effect would appear, that tells you, that abillity to jump is restored. It would inform the player without using words on screen as you were saying.

1a)  I was gonna make walljump working when you press the opposite direction, but again, sadly didn't have time to do that. But i didn't plan to do automatic jump to the different direction when you near wall and press jump and similar stuff, the idea was that you need to "hold on to a wall", which is achieved by moving towards it in the air, to be able to jump from it. To make it a little challenging.

1b) In the contrary, I thought 3 jump was to much and that i didn't even have a lot of places on the levels where i could place those wall-jump restoring items, and they reappear after the character dies (they should work like that, at least), so every time you're trying to complete a level you start with the same abillities.

1c) Hiboxes is a big issue, that's true, but i didn't plan to add checpoints, because i was thinking the game was too easy and too short even without chekpoints, and it kinda feels better when you beat the whole level, but it's more punishing, when you must replay a big chunk of a level that you've already learned how to complete, but the levels are short and simple, so i thought people maybe will fall on spikes a couple times but will eventually make it through

2) The first level is there to "show" a basic movements - the character can jump, then walljump, and then the game tells you that you can jump only 3 times, and then mix it together. There is no time limit, because you learn about that on the 2nd level and then you find these time pickup and etc. But it wasn't very suttle, you're right about that. There are a lot issues with sounds and music, i'll try to fix that and other stuff and add a "patch" version later... I hope i will.

4) As for seperate exe file for setting, I don't know how to do that, i might wanna learn about it, but i'll maybe add pause screen with sound settings and something like that.

Again, i didn't thing the game is that hard for some reason, and thought it was a little chalenging, it makes a player struggle a bit to eventually overcome.
I mean, i like when videogames instead of explaining you every single asspect of the game through text or UI, show you that through the game design and gameplay mechanics and tell you about that using sounds and music and not words. When games let the player expirience them and learn mechanics for themselves, and not doing explaining them. When this kind of aproach suits the game, i guess. That i was trying to do.

And again, thanks for the playing!

Wow, thanks guys! I'm glad to hear that.

Enjoyable game, controls are nice, graphics are good and amazing use of sound as a timer instead of an actual on screen timer.

Developer

Sound and music was the main part of the concept, i wish i had more time to implement every feature that i came up with, but it works (sometimes). Thank you very much!

yes, I enjoyed it ^,..,^

the difficulty was good, and the music kept me playing

Thanks for playing! And i'm happy that you liked my stupid music!
