Developer Feedback Questions
I worked on the ship customization aspect for this jam, so if you like it or think it could use more/less/something different let me know!

Also looking for feedback on the player movement/combat would really appreciate it!

Obviously early days still, but this does look promising! With the whole roguelite idea, I can see future things like meta-progression giving more options when customizing the ship at the start, and all that. The bones are definitely good.

I'm pretty bad at controlling the ship though, and as such died quickly and often. I actually wasn't getting kills at the start until I tried the shotgun, then realized that the enemies just needed quite a few hits to go down. It also took me a surprising amount of time to work out that the bar in the top left was my health, but I'm sure when the placeholder assets are replaced that will be more clear.

Either way, good work on this!

Thank you for playing, and for the kind words! Yeah I will need to do a lot of work around controls/difficulty/UI before I get another playable version out, seems to be a common complaint. Gives me a good list of tasks to do next!

I appreciate you taking the time to try it out and leave feedback!

Great job with the game. Like the different ship customization options.

  •  Great gameplay
  • a lot of customizations
  • I got a little confused when customizing the ship. I wasn't sure why there were two gun options. I was able to figure it out once I started playing.
  • I died a lot when I was starting. Im not sure if the difficulty is supposed to be high or if I suck at the game.  If you keep the difficulty the same maybe add a little practice room to get players used to the buttons. You can have a small area with targets to hit. Just an option.
  • Overall great game and can't wait to see how it develops over time.

Thank you for playing and for the feedback! Yeah I agree the difficulty is tuned way too high right now, I had an easier enemy type made but it had a bug I found right before submitting so I ended up just removing  it for now, I also need to probably start spawning slower and ramp up over time/have bigger waves at certain times. Also need to do some more polish on the customization screen, that is on my list!

Nice job, it was pretty fun. Love that there are different types of ships. The music and sound effects are great. The game runs really nice too. Here are my feedback

  • Love the types of ships
  • Love the randomness of the maps
  • Love the fact that there are different types of guns and I can equip up to two.
  • Really enjoyed the feeling of momentum due to the acceleration tied to a separate button.
  • I wish that the gun selection screen showed the different attributes and fire patterns of the guns
  • I wish there were some easy enemies early on that move slow and one hit kill to get used to the game, currently it becomes too difficult too soon.
  • I will also echo what others said about control, with Keyboard I kept hoping for tanks controls

Thank you for playing! I'm glad to hear you like the momentum and definitely taking note about the controls, and yeah the difficulty is not tuned right at all yet. I'll get the customization screen more polished and communicative, showing the fire patterns is a great idea!

Thank you for the feedback and for trying out my game, really appreciated!

Just played your entry! Personally I liked the ship customization part of the game! Nice addition :)

Left some feedback down below.

Ship Customization

  • I really like the ship customization (personally though I love any game where I can customize anything :D). I think something you could do to improve on it would be to allow selecting parts other than guns to change your ships stats! Like thrusters, wings, color, and etc.
  • For me personally, the ship's UI was not intuitive the first time I saw it. I figured it out after a couple seconds, but maybe consider moving the ship + parts section from the bottom of the page to right beside the parts.
  • Also maybe consider adding a title to each side of the gun selection like Right Blaster: Shotgun, and Left Blaster: Machine Gun. When selecting my gun parts I could not tell which side they go on at first.
  • Also potentially adding some audio feedback on picking a part would be nice as well. It makes the customization feel more immersive based on my time with editors.

General / Gameplay

  • The firing felt nice, but something that would help would be to add a visual cooldown on the guns. Like maybe a shader that turns the sprite progressively red to signal that it will need to cooldown soon?
  • I echo what CrashDumpSoftware stated about the movement as well. For me the current keyboard controls are very hard to get used to.

Thank you for the feedback! Yeah I agree with you on the UI and text/audio stuff, it was definitely a bit rushed here and is not communicating super clearly. It sounds like I need to also do some more testing around the controls, possibly try another method. I really appreciate you taking the time to play and write this out, thank you again!

First of all: You call the music / sfx placeholders, but actually they are great! :) The game itself runs very smooth, and it is kind of fun to play. But very hard! I find it especially difficult to adapt to the controls when using a keyboard, maybe it would be better to have only "turn left/right" instead of "turn into direction". Probably the controls are designed to work with a gamepad? Maybe you can add an option for keyboard + mouse controls?

Overall the game is nice and has potential when you improve on the controls and the graphics. Well done!

PS: The leaderboard does not work for me.

Developer

Thank you for the music praise! With the controls that is interesting, I had experimented with the 'tank style' controls but I thought it felt less intuitive myself 🤔I will do some more testing with that, it seems to be a common complaint! Thanks a ton for playing and leaving feedback, very appreciated!
