This was awesome. I actually ended up making a similar Egyptian Mythology game. Top marks for having snakes as the primary enemies. The underworld of Egyptian mythology was basically just an infestation of fire breathing snakes so I appreciate the accuracy.
The visuals are really good and fit really well. The snakes especially look really good. The music was a great fit too.
The player's projectile felt a bit slow but I noticed that the point was to find more powerful items that increase strength and speed. I think the initial rate of fire should have been a bit faster, especially because you can only shoot in 4 directions, not 8.
The player's velocity affects the projectile's velocity. I'm not sure if that was the intention but when I started working around it, it proved a lot of fun. I would strafe left and right around a snake and instead of firing when I was directly above it, I would fire when I was a bit further left/right. It made it fun to dodge and strike.
Overall, my only suggestion is to allow for diagonal shots as well. I had fun with this game.
When I saw Roguelike I was expecting procedurally generated, turn based and Ascii graphics with the @ symbol centre stage :). This is quite different to that.
It has potential but the combat is way too hard. I hit the snakes multiple times and they wouldn't die. It looks like when I died I was reincarnated a few levels deeper (it kept going up 2 - 4 -6 - 10). But when I changed rooms after that it was insta-death from any snakes in the room.
Roguelikes have never been my jam but I think this was pretty nice. It was neat seeing all the things I could pick up and trying to navigate each room. I actually made it two or three levels in but was killed since I couldn't find any more health pickups.
The sound was pretty stark, music wasn't bad but it does become repetitive after a while. The gameplay was functional, though it seemed like the hit collision on attacks wasn't all that great. I would hit an enemy around dead center but my projectile would just go right through them, same thing happened when enemies would launch attacks at me.
As for the theme and accuracy part? Well it does seem to include a lot of Egyptian mythology scenery and references I knew about like the Book of the Dead. Beyond that I'm not sure how well or deeply it was explored.
I didn't find it great but its far from the worst game I've played in a jam. Good job!
Game does not run from the Itch.io app in Windows. I'm a roguelike fan so I might try the direct download later.
