Wow.

SPOILERS BELOW

Somehow - thought provoking. We being as a small bird, eating bugs and worms on a large, gray map. Yet as we grow bigger, the camera zooms out revealing that all this time we were feeding off of a hippopotamus, perhaps creating something of a symbiotic relationship; him providing the bird with a steady supply of food, us cleaning him off of unwanted vermin. Then, as we become larger and larger more, our apetite grows along. Simple cockroaches satisfy us no more, and thus friendly bird becomes the bird of prey, devouring other birds so that they could pose no threat to us. Then other animals, lemurs and boars. Soon enough the objective becomes clear: grow large enough to be able to swallow the hippopotamus itself. Was his fate sealed from the start, or did he became accidental orchestrator of his demise, allowing the bird to feast upon his own skin? Or maybe it was hippopotamus' act of selfish sacrifice, fulfilling his part in this skewed cycle of life.

I for sure don't have a clue, but I had fun playing the game. And the music is very chill <3

I feel like you're the only person who TRULY understands Hungry Hungry for Hippos. Thank you for checking the game out! This comment made my entire week! :)

I'll reply again to drop some hidden lore for your contemplation.

We had originally planned to go further; beyond the watering hole. You would consume the hippo, and the oxpecker would still be insatiable. You as the newly crowned king of the watering hole would venture out into the world to continue consuming hippos. Hippos of all kinds. Hippos of all shapes. Hippos doing all sorts of things. Driving to work. Raising familes. Investing in the hippoconomy. The only cure for the oxpecker would be to consume the entire planet... no... hippoverse. Until there was nothing left. Only to eventually succumb to starving in the abyss of space alone. Thinking back to the simple days of ticks, maggots, and flys. Where did it all go wrong?

Congrats on your first game jam project <3 Game is very bizarre and fun hahaha.  I agree with one of the comments that you should maybe add an element of challenge with bigger creatures. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking it out! Yes I wish I could have made thresholds to consume the land creatures other than the hippo. Requiring you to eat them in a certain order, but ran out of time!

Congratulations on your first jam entry! My main critique would be to include some element of challenge, for example if you try to eat something bigger than you then something negative happens. But this is a great entry for your first time!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! I agree, I had planned to add a large falcon/predatory bird as a hazard for the player but ran out of time!

Talented. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing. Show stopping. Spectacular. Never the same. Totally unique. Completely not ever been done before.

It's obviously a simple game, but sometimes the fun lies in simplicity, and that's definitely the case here. Loved it!

Developer

Thank you for checking it out! As our first game jam we definitely wanted to keep it simple, glad it was a success :)

love the art and music! Perfectly fits the theme ;)

The hippo has been consumed. Animations for the bird would've helped a lot, as its the main element of the game and is very static. Other than that, simple game with simple graphics, pretty fun!  :)

Developer

Thanks for playing the game! Yeah I wish we could have had some animations as well, like the frogs hopping around instead of being stationary. I appreciate your feedback!
