Here I am! I finally played your game :-) Sorry for taking so long. Got wrapped up in my game's update but I planned to play before the event ended. And I loved this! You know I got into it when it started, I got in the cabin, turned on my flashlight and then ran around my own house, turning off all the lights, I really wanted to get immersed in your game! Here's my feedback:
OVERALL FUN:
1. That opening scene was well put together. Including the voice acting (see further down).
2. Love the initial gameplay with the fog and fireflies! Great start for the setting of your game!
3. Looking for the toys was creepy AF. Some really well placed jump scares, and the audio/music here was creepy.
4. I really enjoyed your game. The story was interesting, had funny moments, and I loved the ending! :-) Really great game!!!
ART/GRAPHICS:
1. Great artwork, character design, and environments.
2. Love the small objects you can find and pick up. However, when you pick them up in the dark with the flashlight, they are just black silhouettes. Seeing them lit up and in full color would be nice.
3. Is the fog supposed to be inside the house? Also... some of the fireflies outside are bleeding through the door. Not sure if you want that. Not a huge deal, though. Just minor details.
CONTROLS/UI:
1. Great tutorial. Easy to read and follow. You explained the basic controls, and I understood what I was doing. Kept it simple, which is a good thing.
2. Crouch (C) appears to be a bit glitchy right now. When you crouch, you bounce down, up and then down... same with getting up—just a jarring animation.
3. The rest of the controls were great and easy to understand.
SOUND/MUSIC:
1. Oh, the opening voice acting was really good! BRAVO HERE!
2. Nice outdoor audio, music, and sound design. Really well put together!
3. The background audio has an odd break in the loop. It just stops, quiet, and then picks up again. Not a huge deal but noticeable.
BUGS/ISSUES:
1. I think I found a bug by accident. It only happens if you do it in this order LOL You're welcome for breaking your game :-D Start the game, and you're on the main menu. I click "Options," which then takes me to the options screen. If you hit the ESC key... it then takes you to a screen that only shows... "Resume Game," "Options," "Controls," "Exit to Main Menu," & "Quit Game." There's no new game, and if I hit resume game... it just takes me to a black screen that goes nowhere. Hitting ESC takes me back to the title screen with those same options, but New Game isn't there still. The only way out of this is to click "Exit to Main Menu" and then start a "New Game." Nothing crashed or froze, and I was easily able to just go back to the original main menu, but I figured I'd let you know.
Thanks a lot for taking the time! And it seems you played the update! indeed there's some minor fixes that we are working on right now (A new update on some of those and an AI improvement is almost out :p) The fireflies through the door are not supposed to be there, and also the fog is not supposed to be inside, but we use it as a placeholder for other particlues and atmosphere (twitching that as we work on learning how to add dust particles and such) The crouching camera and animations is something will tackle in the future to make it better, is one of our headaches lol. And indeed, the loop in the audio is set like that because is not finished, but we wanted to leave it there to give players a glimpse of what's coming, Since we are changing to use FMOD for cleaner and smoother audio atmosphere/dialogues etc. And thanks for pointing out that ESC bug! we'll have to check that out! And we hope you keep enjoying our future updates too, as i can say we'll enjoy your game a lot! Thanks again for your time :)
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured you were working on all the feedback below. Overall this is a great game, though! Loved it!
I am going through all submissions to make all developers aware of an important Google form I've made.
I'm joining the IQ folks to help organize smaller events in between the main FQ event in order to help prevent us from getting too many games in main events. Right now, I have a planned structure for these events but I would like to hear from everyone who was in this event in order to tune things better. The survey is a bit long, but it covers as much as I could think of. If you can take the time to do the survey by June 1st, I would immensely appreciate it!
You can find the form here: https://forms.gle/P9LPYwERhJtpZzteA
The story was incredibly cheesy, the dialogue weird and the gameplay janky, but I loved it so fucking much lmao, it was really awesome cause it really felt like some strange alien interpretation of earth, with a really small house, giant forests, the way scaling worked like, how the aliens thought you wouldn't see them if they would stay inmovile, etc...
I think it constantly walks the line of horror and parody, with sections that were really scary but then things like how unintentionally funny the dialogue was at times and some strange level design ideas (like why is there a fixed camera section near the start but nowhere else?)
The core design and idea is really good, with a nice execution but that can have really massive improvement:
- Make the flashlight centered, increase the range, reduce the brightness and remove the model (the hand isn't holding it so I think it wouldn't ruin inmersion) this would make it feel better to use, not as janky and would make the enviroments scarier cause you wouldn't be able to make them superbright.
- Remove the fixed camera section and make it so the next times you go through the initial area the tutorial messages don't appear.
- Make the items in the cornfield glowy (just like how you did with the keychain), increase the time before going insane, and maybe an extra challenge could be good? (like having to avoid a special alien or something).
- Add a little bit more variation to the corn and forest zones.
- Make the textures a little more rough, less glossy.
And I think thats all, the overall structure is good, just needs polish and quality of life changes. Great experience.
Hi I'm part of the Feedback Quest. Gameplay of your game is up on the VOD if you're interested.
LINK: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1821909169
You were there during the stream XD but I'll still give feedback here.
First I'd like to note, that the game is very bare bones. So I fully understand that it needs a lotta work. For starters the opening camera shift was a big throw off. Next are the doors in the cabin clipping me into another dimension and the VHS player not having indicators. The flashlight also was too bright yet oddly enough didn't illuminate as far given how blinding it is. I feel that those need to be adressed as technical problems.
In the visual sense, the maze with the leaves and trees were repeating and it was so noticeable. Another noticeable thing was the dialogue being awkward. Gramatical errors should be ironed out as soon as possible.
Now for this part, it is entirely subjective. The scares were good, but like I said in the VOD, it wears off fairly quick and now instead of fighting what is in the game, the game is now my enemy. The mechanics and ideas need a lot more thought put into it. The Dialogue again, broke immerssion. As was the theming as a whole. Was it horror? comedy? parody? I had these thoughts in mind when playing and I feel like its too mushed together. Like I suggested on stream, pick one central idea and make everything fit with that instead of trying to grab it all.
Still, the game has a lot of potential. That cornfield section is proof that you guys know how to make atmosphere and scare. The world looks reasonably good. Gives off the same vibe as Choo Choo Charles which I recommend you try out. It might give more insight into how you can build your game.
Personal Rating: 1/5. The game is still in its earliest stage but I still have to be fair and say that it needs a lot of work. I see the potential but its so rough that its indistinguishable from a mess. I hope to play it again in the future.
Thanks a lot for all your technical inputs. Is just what we needed. I was trying not to get into the choo choo charles "train" but i guess i can't fight it anymore lol. We are already working on all this details, so we'll bring much better quality next time!
I look forward to your next update :D
Just uploaded a Shorts of your game :D Shorts! It was nice
haha, just saw it! That's a really nice short! thanks :D
Enjoyed this one quite a bit, even with some design flaws that made the experience a little clunky.
Presentation: overall art direction and sound design are quite good and atmospheric, they reel you in and that's really a major plus.
Controls: the player controller is a bit stiff and could use some smoothing here and there. The jump needs some tweaking to work.
UI: I think the UI could use some improvement, especially regarding the inventory.
Story: the plot is quite interesting and engaging, with a novelty take on the genre.
Audio: Music and Sound Design are both on the spot for this kind of title and right now are one of the strongest points of this entry.
Overall I enjoyed my time with Who Are You?, but I think it would benefit from some more polish in the camera, player controller, and the UI.
Thanks for playing! indeed, those are the points we are currently working on, trying to tackle one thing at a time so we can get to that point. Lots to polish but fun work, so thanks for taking the time and pointing that out! we'll do our best to cover and fix everything soon!
Who Are You? is an enjoyable spooky atmospheric experience with great music, sound, and tension. It was nice to witness the beginning intro and anticipate what Who Are You? is all about. There is a good amount of exploration during the beginning to get a vibe of the story and encounter the mystery. I'm a casual gamer so I needed some help during the cornfield section, but once that was completed, I felt very happy we accomplished finding all of Mattie's toys needed to reach the next level. As for plot, I do tend to relish in following threads and discovering clues to why the protagonist's family members went missing and piecing how it all comes together. The demo is a good start in getting a glimpse into what the eventual final product will be. Overall, Who Are You? contains fun gameplay so I'm looking forward to the end result when the full version gets launched in the future. 👽🎉
First things first- you don't expect a game submitted to a jam to have such intro. Seriously! Good work on that front!
I liked the atmosphere- pretty spooky, twilight zone-y stuff.
Now let's go on the things I didn't like. Collision detection was slightly off. At least twice I had my camera on one side of the wall and body on the other (I think it happens when opening the door).
I'd rather have one 'use' button than two- I spent longer than I wanted to on trying to use the vcr :)
Music and sound- great no notes from me.
In the end- I didn't finish the game. I got lost in the field, found three toys. Carried them to the box, and then... nothing? Is there more toys? Did something appear, that I could collect? I don't know. I lost my mind twice on that point :)
Over all- this has potential to be really great, but needs some technical, and gameplay polish.
Hey, First of all, thanks for playing and taking the time to write this! Second, we are working on the updates for those things. Coming soon in a few days since we are working on them. Specially on the controls (trying to learn how we can improve that one) and directions too. We had little to none experience in those fields, so learning! Still we are planning to bring a more polished and straightforward game.
Regarding the field. There's 5 Toys in total (working on making that one clear) and you have 3 minutes to complete it(the lenght of the song) we left a link to the toys here in the coments with all the toys if you wanna try again. But as you said, we still have some things to improve as we keep learning, so your inputs are really helpful!! Thanks :)
To help all streamers playing our game. If you get stucked or want to do it quick. Here's the map for the corn field level: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1INE1JcHvvh49_DOaG8zBKveZPtWWxAJl/view?usp=share...
Creepy and spooky! Not exactly scary but sound design is on point! Very fun thriller. Gameplay is way too difficult for a beginner player. Controls are explained in the beginning with a sidebar but specific items are needed to move the story forward. Once items are received, it requires an advanced button prompt to make an object in inventory to interact with another world object so this causes some confusion with the player. Flashlight is a little too bright which makes the objects that you need to find almost invisible in the light source. Recommend to add a soft outline or glow to key objects within a certain range of the player and textures/colors for better player experience. Good stuff here. Keep it up!
