I'm thinking of taking several different unfinished game worlds and link them together with simple portals.

Maybe that's also an idea for you! :)

This is a great idea.

You could even make a unity package (assuming you're using unity) to let others do the same easily.

I'm using an open source engine called Lamiae, but I think it should be easy enough to do in Unity :)
