I think I need to try this game to actually understand how to play - just reading the instructions didn't help me figure it out yet - but I love the concept of having to 'rescue' the poor bookmark in distress! A different take on how bookmarks are usually used in books! :)
Basically, on each room (level) of the dungeon, you'll pick one monster to face. Let's say I choose OGRE. I then decide on a number that will both skip that many pages but also let me use that many words on the page I stop at to try to spell out "O G R E". The higher your number, the more words (and their letters) you'll have available to spell out the monster's name, but also the farther along in the book you'll move.
Scenario:
I pick "OGRE" and the number "10". Also, I am going to spend my one available skill point on 1 Strength so I can add two words to my "attack". Since we start on page 1, I move forward in the book ten pages to page 11. On page 11, I read the first ten (+two from my 1 Strength) words of the page which in my case is "Their smiles went sour as the room filled with the sweet, acrid..." Let's see if this has all letters I need to spell out OGRE
ThEiR smiles went sOur as the room filled with the sweet, acrid
There is no G among those twelve words so I failed! I have to either fight another monster in the same room or the same OGRE next turn, but if I fail against the OGRE again, I lose the game.

Oh! Thank you for the extra detail. That makes a LOT more sense!
