Rule Confirmation

Hello,

First, thanks for hosting this game jam — I’m really excited to work on my first public game! I already have a plan, but I’d like to confirm a couple of things to make sure it follows the rules:

  1. The opening and ending scenes don’t count toward the 20 seconds, right?

  2. If the main gameplay is 20 seconds, but certain actions (like picking up a special item) extend the timer, is that allowed under the rules?

Thanks!

Happy to have you on board IsaLand! It's always great to see someone choosing this jam to make their first published game.

1. Correct! We're looking for 20 seconds of gameplay. If you choose to put something before or after the gameplay (like a menu, a cutscene, etc., it does not count towards the 20 seconds of gameplay. If you put a cutscene in the middle of the gameplay, it does. While these things are allowed, if you can get players straight into the gameplay, that would be even better.

2. If you extend the gameplay with pickups, and the total gameplay time goes over 20 seconds, that would be against the spirit of the jam because it's not a 20 second game anymore. If your main gameplay is 10 seconds and the pickups never cause the total gameplay to go beyond 20 seconds, it's absolutely fine.

Thanks for the explanation — that really cleared things up!

Hi, question: If you start with 20 seconds but can perform actions that recover time, for example +5 seconds, but without ever exceeding the 20-second threshold (example: 17 seconds + 5 additional seconds = 20), would that be allowed?

The total length of the gameplay should be 20 seconds and should not be extended by adding extra time. If you start the game with 10 seconds and add time, not to exceed a total of 20 seconds, that would be fine.
