Adam Dixon rated Harder They Fall

A downloadable game.

Harder They Fall is one of my favourite examples of a short game that has a really sharp focus on telling a particular kind of story. I've played it a bunch of times, from playing out a team of cowboys facing weird monsters to a shrek based game focusing on the power of the all star that will never leave my mind (I think it ended with Princess Fiona riding a sandworm on the planet of Arrakis, so). On another note, we used in on an actual play (These Flimsy Rituals) to tell a more serious, emotional story of the slaying of a god and all that caused.

The thing it does well - beyond dominoes, beyond kaiju-sized fighters - is focus into the flow and the emotion of the confrontation. We're not just hitting each other with a sword repeatedly - we're moving across terrain, using it to our advantage, ruin left in our wake. We're not fighting faceless enemies, but instead confronting thing that represent something to us. The course of the fight will change us, the abilities that we held dear will be lost.

Basically, it's fantastic. Also, it lets you do fights between really big things and uses dominoes as a resolution system, which is rad.
