ShaggyMoose rated Lurking I: Immortui

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Summary: This game is a love-letter to classics such as the early Ultima games, as evidenced by the many tongue-in-check references throughout and the close resemblance both artistically and from a mechanics standpoint. Definitely worth playing if you are a fan of old-school CRPG.

Probably the key aspect worth mentioning is the complete lack of any reflex driven or lever/slider/number/button etc. puzzles. The game relies entirely on conversation and environmental hints, logic and deduction. I found this refreshing and enjoyed having to make notes compared to the way this is handled practically automatically by contemporary systems. However, be aware that you will need to actively keep track of these, otherwise it is very possible to become stuck.

The mechanics are simple but generally robust; movement, party management and combat are all straightforward, but unfortunately the inventory interface is painful. Thankfully the game does provide an auto-map, since I find tile-graphing particularly tedious. The story is the usual fantasy fare but works well to keep events moving forward and conversations are well written to provide a blend of information, world building and humour without making it too difficult to sift out plot points.

I also recommend continuing on to Lurking 2 which is more of the same goodness but with updated graphics, mechanics and user interface.
