lilithkismet rated The World Begins With You

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

Atmospheric puzzle platformer jam game. Takes about 40 minutes to complete. A slow, mysterious and unexplained story where a young child with a device implanted on their head wakes up without memories in the ruins of a prison. Navigate through a ruined world, solve a couple of mazes, and avoid a couple of enemies. I love the atmospheric background music and the cinematic camera angles which show off the ruins of grand buildings and low-poly landscape. It makes the world feel epic and expansive. Despite how much I loved the game, I lowered the score to "average" because of a couple big drawbacks that I experienced. First,  in the interest of the cinematic angles, the player is given 0 camera control. Sometimes the camera is positioned in such a way that I couldn't tell where I was supposed to go. Other times the viewpoint was pulled very far away from the character, so it became hard to judge the distance between or the scale of objects when I was trying to jump, leading to quite a few irritating deaths. This is compounded by the fact that the input felt a little bit off to me; even when I was close enough to see what I was doing, I would jump a little too slow or momentum wouldn't quite carry me as far as I was expecting, leading to more irritating deaths. So although I was very impressed with the concept and enjoyed the game overall, the rough edges still show its roots as a jam game.
