The Shrouded Isle - Sunken Sins is a relatively small game, but it scores high on replayability. You run a cult, managing human resources, postponing inevitable disaster, trying to appease an evil God. There's room for some strategy, but the Island will generally have you rolling with the (largely randomized) punches.
It has a very distinct art style: a single shade monochrome, with beautifully detailed (hand drawn?) graphics. It really delivers a bleak and desolate atmosphere.
The sound effects are great. Very creepy. And the music.. Is amazing. There's this piece on chello and guitar, martial drumming and haunting violin.. and all of that is amazing. But I nearly forgot all of that in the first draft of this review, because of the first track. It's composition and (limited) melody are pretty standard, but the drums are amazing. Just one infinite, heavily syncopated groove. It's engaging, hypnotizing and it's probably the second biggest draw for starting up this game, over and over again.
The main attraction being the writing. There are many branching stories in the background. Some are actually quite evocative, amidst the general doom and gloom. Most paths do end up in tragedy, though. There are great little details, hinting at secrets, motives and whatever exists in the outside world. Is it possible to know anything beyond the borders of the island and the deliberate ignorance of your cult?
It took me a while to try this game out. I was afraid it would be cynical and depressing. But, like a cult, it drew me in when I wasn't doing too well and it hooked into my brain. I'm not sure if it helped me through, or if it just hijacked my spare time, but it was worth it either way.
