Disclaimer in advance that I am a friend of the developer. This is a a spoiler-free review.
I first played Us Lovely Corpses a few years ago and recently came back to give it another playthrough, and it's just as much fun the second time through. You play through the perspective of Alejandra "Alex" de Rosa, an up-and-coming witch following in the footsteps of her grandmother, and your goal is to remove the monster taking root at the heart of your best friend's home. Your grandma has done this a million times over, so it should be a piece of cake...right?
The story benefits greatly from d Marie's incredible knack for dialogue and pacing. While the story is emotional and intense, and occasionally veers into incredibly dark territory, Alex's internal monologue keeps things anchored and the tone relatively buoyant. The "monster" concept is a great excuse for the author to flex her narrative muscles and provides some interesting interactivity. You can get a "game over" in this game! Watch out!
The art, both sprites and UI, is unique and charming. Heavily reminiscent of Revolutionary Girl Utena and with lots of great, cute girls. And roses. Lots and lots of roses. I found the music to be lovely and unobtrusive.
Us Lovely Corpses is a great little game and relatively short, so it's a great way to pass an afternoon. I think it would make a fun experience to stream, too!
