This was my very first solo RPG and I don't regret it at all. I feel like this is a great introduction for people looking to do some journaling and playing. Here are my pros and cons about Caveat Emptor:
PROS:
1. Rules - Simple, straightforward, and easy enough to memorize over one or two sessions. The mechanics aren't hard at all, with just the booklet, the required items, and time to yourself. You will have to rely a lot on the Items and Client list, but that's not so bad. I've played enough times to know what I want to modify in my playthroughs.
2. Size - Since it's meant to be an introductory game that can be played in an hour, you won't need much. You'll need a small space to write on, place your cards, and roll the dice. It's a very tactile game that encourages your imagination, so you can pretty much do it wherever you've got a flat, clean surface, even outside.
3. Creativity - You can write as little or as much as you want, on your journal, phone, or computer. In my case, I absolutely needed this because I needed small, easy prompts that I can do when I want to write stuff down and think by myself. It also helps me use as much of my writing materials as possible.
CONS:
1. Short - This might not be for you if you want to play for hours or extended periods, since it's meant to be a short exercise in writing and thinking. You don't get much out of it other than the very brief and simple mechanic.
CONCLUSION:
Caveat Emptor is a great game for people who need to slow down, have a little mischief in their life, and do some writing.
