A downloadable game.
One of the best solo TTRPGs I've ever played. It strikes a great balance with all my favorite elements:
- Bite-sized but impactful nuggets of worldbuilding that offer strong hints of flavor while still leaving plenty of room for the player to make the world their own
- A defined gameplay loop that keeps things rolling during gaming sessions
- Hexcrawl exploration with enticing POIs and varied encounter tables - not always combat!
- Plus a lightweight dungeon generator that lets me roll up a dungeon on an index card in just a couple minutes
- A skill and HP-based leveling system that feels rewarding, like my PC really is going from "zero to hero" as a hack-and-slash barbarian
- The bestiary props up the worldbuilding in a subtle but effective way - such as tyrannosaurs and pteranodons being akin to dragons in this world, or skeletal warriors and rogue sorcerers adding that "dark magic" flair to the setting
- The seasonal weather table gives my solo campaign a "tangible" sense of time passing as I play, adding to the sense of growth for both my character as well as the unfurling map and larger plots at play
- The oracles and generators have served me very well in my campaign thus far - quick to use, varied enough to stay fresh for a long time, and nicely tied to the tone of the setting
A few improvements and additions I would love to see:
- A better layout and bookmarks for the PDF - currently, many of the rules sections (such as combat, leveling, dungeon generation, etc.) are a slog to read through
- Some sort of guidance or framework for companions and followers
- Battle Barge creation, upgrades, and combat rules
- A very minor thing (and my own personal taste): I'm not a fan of the Getting Lost system during travel. It's a bit confusing the way the current rules are written and it generally slows things down during the game. An alternative I homebrewed for my own game was a d6 "Travel mishap" table of more varied roadblocks that could occur while travelling if you roll a 1-2. For example, spoiled rations, minor injuries, exposure, etc. Just my two cents!
Overall, Kal-Arath an incredibly enjoyable and compelling RPG with well-designed systems for solo gameplay. The setting has a enough flavor to paint a vivid picture without requiring the player to familiarize themselves with entire tomes of world lore - I feel like I can truly make it my own, but the creative "mental load" is very light as I play. Combat is fun and strikes a sweet spot between light and medium crunch.
This is a game I'm going to be returning to again and again for a long time to come. Thanks, Castle Grief!
