sleepytoad rated Dread X Collection

sleepytoad rated a Horror Collection 5 years ago
A downloadable Horror Collection for Windows.

Since this is a collection of short games, i figured i'd do a collection of short "reviews":

Rotgut: By far the most boring game on the collection. Rotgut is everything people hate about walking simulators: it's long, boring and the environments are poorly put together. If you walk off the map (which is very easy to do), the game will count that as a win, so if you want to save yourself 20-30 minutes of boredom and still get the checkmark that says you beat the game, do that.

The Pony Factory: David Szymansky is back at it again with a simplistic but effective horror shooter. The short but frequent backtracking for ressources can get tedious, but the rest of the game is perfectly serviceable and it startled me a few times.

Dont go out: not much to this one, it's a tactical RPG where you must survive 9 turns to win. Your can't fight the enemies but you can draw cards that allow you to summon light sources or allies, although they quickly become useless. There's only one map so you won't spend more than 5 minutes playing it.

Hand of Doom: Short dungeon crawler. It lacks combat but the atmosphere is great.  Reciting incantations is fun, although i wish the one that gives you a light source lasted longer.

Summer Night: Very fun take on those awful LCD handhelds with a horror twist. The ending took me by surprise and was probably the creepiest part of the collection for me.

The Pay is nice: Fantastic world building that is way shorter than i would've liked. I hope we get to see more stuff from this developer soon.

Mr Bucket told me to: A very lite survival game where you have to sacrifice more and more convenience as you play. It has nice atmosphere and the monotony that stems from the survival mechanics is often broken up by something entertaining.

Shatter: Probably my favourite game as far as art direction is concerned. Gameplay is nothing to write home about but the environments are phenomenal.

Outsiders: As interesting as a lot of the previous games were, their gameplay was minimalist at best. This isn't the case for Outsiders. You wake up in a house where you will need to find several, randomly placed items to solve various puzzles. Without spoiling too much, this game actually offers a decent challenge and seeing it through to the end will require focus and persistence.

Carthanc: Interesting environments only carry this walking simulator so far, as slow exploration is quickly replaced with platforming sections which range from perfectly fine to tedious and finicky.
