Alakazen_Gaming rated Underjoy

A downloadable game for Windows.

Phenomenal first game by Grimward Studio. Great atmosphere, and the voice acting of the main character was well done. The pacing was decent for the most part, though sometimes it was not always obvious when a door would take you to a new area with no way to return and investigate for more lore.

Speaking of lore, there is a lot of reading in this game. Great effort is put into world-building through documents, emails, and tape recordings found throughout the facility, with some voice-acted and some read by the player. More telling and less showing is to be expected here, as this was the solo developer's first game. However, the notes and documents could have been shortened and still gotten the point across.

The lengthy bit of reading aside, the game functions and flows well, and can be completed in roughly an hour, as the introductory screens indicate. It's almost always apparent where the game wants you to go, even if the facility appears a bit labyrinthian, as is surely intended.

If you're looking for a creepy and unsettling experience without an overreliance on jump scares and chase sequences, this is the game for you. For fans of liminal and mascot horror, you must check this out and experience it for yourself. I count myself as a fan of Grimward Studio and look forward to their next game!
