porta2note rated Sky Rogue

porta2note rated a game 5 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This is SUCH a cool game, especially with a flight stick + throttle setup. The flight mechanics & feel of the game are perfect -  flying around everywhere doing crazy aereal manouvers, spamming missiles all over & taking down bogies, is fun as hell. Like a lot of 'roguelikes', it gets pretty hard pretty quickly, and the "permadeath" mechanic and lack of save slots means a lot of players who aren't willing to grind away aren't going to see most of the environments, which is a shame. That's considered part of the genre, but personally, I think allowing a save before each mission would make it a ton more accessible. There's a cheat-y debug way to advance the game if you can't get past the boss fights, but I won't iterate that here; there's also a free flight mode if you just want to swoop around & take in the scenery. Aside from that, I can't knock this - it plays exactly how you'd expect based on how the screenshots look and how the music sounds, and that means heaps of fun.

Props for true multiplatform support, including controllers (getting my HOTAS combo working in Linux was a little finicky with no official drivers, but I got it working in the end.)

System requirements are fairly light - worked fine on my Core 2 Quad + HD4670.
