KaosuDX rated LoveManiac

KaosuDX rated a LoveManiac 73 days ago
A downloadable LoveManiac for Windows, Linux, and Android.

I don't usually comment or write reviews, but since adult Undertale games are so rare and this one has so much potential, I figured I'd leave one here for the game's alpha build and update this occasionally when the game (hopefully) gets more updates. Played it on a phone, by the way.

Visuals/Presentation - By far the game's strongest point. The pixel art looks really nice and evoke the same vibes as UT while also being more detailed. I also love Chara and Frisk's designs. I slightly prefer the look of their overworld sprites over their zoomed in art but they're both great. The UI elements look pretty much what you'd expect from UT.

I do have a few gripes with the Portrait/Landscape modes though. The game feels like it's optimized for Portrait mode, because Landscape mode has way too much dead space. I get that it's probably made with PC in mind, but it'd be nice if it was slightly modified to be less zoomed out. And then my issue with Portrait mode is kind of the opposite, where it feels a bit too zoomed in and cluttered during battle. I often couldn't see some of the bullets that we're coming because my thumb was covering part of the screen. Also, the background art gets cutoff in Portrait mode which is a bit of a shame.

Gameplay - I really like that you can control the soul using the touch screen, as if feels a lot more natural than a digital D-Pad to me, but I do hope D-Pad control becomes an option for those who prefer it that way, especially since the game is planned for have overworld exploration. Also, I'm not sure if mouse control is an option on PC, but it should be if it isn't. I do have a few nitpicks though.

First is that the soul lags a little too much behind the movement of your finger, which feels weird. It should be a little snappier in my opinion. Second, the movement of the attack bar is different compared to UT. Not necessarily a good or a bad thing, but it does feel a little inconsistent to hit the middle.

Bugs - The first bug I encountered involved the Gallery. I finished the demo for the first time, then pressed the "exit" button and checked the Gallery. I tapped the battle replay and, after realizing that the Chara fight was starting up again, I closed the game to check the other scenes, but the Gallery just wouldn't load up again and would just crash the game.

The second was during my second time playing using Landscape mode (first playthrough used Portrait). Basically, one of Chara's attacks (the one where she throws sets of three knives all over the screen) broke completely. She was throwing the knives all the way on the left side of the screen, outside of the battle box, so it was impossible to get hit the entire turn as the knives would despawn before reaching the actual battle box.

Music - Not much to say, it's fantastic. Though, I'd argue Chara's theme is a little too intense for a tutorial boss so I hope there's a harder rematch with more intricate attack patterns and a harder win condition later in development (and hopefully new scenes as a reward for winning).

Expectations - I hope that, first and foremost, the game isn't abandoned and left to rot, but also that it develops into a proper UT fangame with interesting mechanics, a decent story, and charming writing on par with other popular fangames out there. I also hope there's more than one scene with each character (I want more Chara scenes).

When it comes to gameplay, I hope the fights become harder and that they require you to use ACT in tandem with FIGHT in order to win, with different results based on your actions during the fight. Also, if there are standard enemy encounters like in UT, I hope the ACT's become lewd. It would be really funny if we actually level up love instead of LOVE.
