Casa Serena rated Skyless Chapter 1

A downloadable game for Windows.

Skyless contains much more custom artwork than the average RPG Maker title, and it's all of high quality--especially the music. This game is artistically cohesive. Memorable moments are common. Nearly every interaction is charming in some way.

The feeling of life in this game is hard to exaggerate. The world, main characters, and NPCs all reveal truths about their world and about themselves in subtle ways. This is a world with a past, populated by lives that have been lived.

Level design is similar to that in Law of the One, shunning an overworld in favor of a grounded, interconnected layout without perspective breaks. Story elements cause level design to take a more focused approach, however, and areas are laid out so that backtracking doesn't take a long time. So while there is a lot of content to explore, it isn't especially sprawled out. This grounded way of designing levels adds a lot to immersion and exploration.

Gameplay is pretty varied, with lots of npcs and objects to interact with and a number of cool puzzles. While combat is not the game's main focus, it's still handled with subtlety, with hidden equipment and skills and a small arsenal of consumable weapons. The encounter rate is generally low, which allows for easy exploration.

Skyless is a unique, charming, alive-feeling game that rewards deliberate play and thorough exploration. Easily recommend.
