Wolf's Retreat rated TORNUKTU

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

For me, Christmas horror as a sub-genre can be a hit or miss. Normally, I don't seek it out. But I've slowly been coming around to the sub-genre as a whole and really enjoying what I've played or watched so far.

In the case of TORNUKTU? This is a good example of a short yet fun holiday horror game that even made me jump from its spooks. Even with it being as short, the atmosphere is great; festive while also being creepy at the same time. Personally, I'd be really unsettled living in the middle of nowhere in the Alaskan wilderness, either on my own or with family. However, this wasn't the only thing that made me feel this way. I found the snowmen to be pretty freaky and even the actual Tornuktu to be even more so. The uncanny wide smile and big eyes *shudders*. In one way, it made me think of Krampus to a degree. I do wonder if the developer took any inspiration from actual Alaskan/Inuit folklore and myth to come up with the creature. Whatever way it was created, it's been done really well.

As a whole, TORNUKTU is a good bit of festive horror that's perfect for the holidays. The atmosphere is good, the pixelated old PS1-style adds to the environment and feel of the overall experience, and the story, while short and linear, is expertly crafted. I'm definitely going to check out more games from Jonny's Games after this. This was a lot of fun, and I would recommend it!
