This is a really well written, heartbreaking story about grief. It's also a deeply political story about the failures of bureaucracy and capitalism! I mean, these girls are literally living in the slums, and the first thing the police does is check if they are undocumented or not (which they are wrong on). It's a tragic story about how these systems, these networks and people in power, constantly dehumanize queer and poor folks and let us down. I felt absolutely sick watching just how bad it gets for these women, which I think was the point. ACAB for fucking real. It almost got comical with the funeral section, which I'm not sure was the point, actually.
In a way, this is a straight up short story with sparse visual elements, although the little sprites that do show up help flesh out the characters more. There is virtually no dialogue and I think that makes for a quite unique and interesting entry. The prose itself is exceptional, and I felt like I had picked up a really well written book at the library. And in the end, it left me with a harrowing feeling in my stomach. Really exceptional work!
