This is one I have to write an actual review for because unfortunately I did not get to it while the jam was still running. Still I see it did relatively well! For a first foray, really promising! I know you were probably the youngest member of the competition, but I think it's always really valuable to get alternate view points, and it was interesting reading what you had to say about the creation process. I enjoyed the story... but like a lot of horror, it admittedly lost me at the ending. I think it's a truly fascinating concept, but the end is very... religious. It's very about sin and punishment as a form of justice isn't it? I mean LUCKILY yes they're dead on and the guy they have is the killer, but like they just lynch him on the spot and then the spirits drag him to hell, and if you try and help him you end up in limbo...
I think it's a lost opportunity to explore the idea of reformation and what and how your sins can haunt you. The rewritten ending helps soften the blow a little, with the main character being a little unsure how to feel, but he still moves on awfully fast. I don't know what the word count is, so I don't know if you just barely scraped under, but I do think it is a massively lost opportunity. It's even slightly touched upon after he has his little episode outside of the second time at the hotel. The twist doesn't feel cheap, per se, so much as just, kinda there. "Well that just happened." "Erm, the ghosts of my previous victims are RIGHT BEHIND ME aren't they?" It's okay that we just killed this guy because he's a serial killer! Also admittedly some of the stuff about consent is pretty shoehorned in. It's the sort of "yes on paper this is how it works but in real life probably not" sort of thing, which might be showing the age of the author here.
I ENDED UP COMPLAINING A LOT but I still really like it! It's because I think there's so much promise here that I ended up writing all this feedback. I think the artistic direction is phenomenal, shout out to the kind of silliness of the two sex scenes, and the soundtrack and backgrounds are well chosen. I'm very excited for the creator's next work this coming october!
