Marvellyous rated Highway Blossoms

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I enjoyed the romance part of this story, I found myself rooting for Amber and Marina and being invested in their happiness. There was some good nuance to the romance which I found refreshing, as well as thoughts on grief and how our mental health can make us sabotage ourselves. This all carried me through the rest of the story, which is generally good, I just thought it had some pacing issues; at times I found myself wanting to get to the end quicker just to get it over with rather than because I wanted to see how it ended.

I really liked the two main characters and found their banter and juxtaposing personalities to be very charming, which made their romance compelling and sweet. However I wasn't much of a fan of the treasure hunting antagonists, and unfortunately for me they are around for a significant part of the story. The romance aspects of the plot are quite nuanced and thoughtful, whereas in comparison these character's parts felt very dumbed down, and I just didn't click with the comedy they're supposed to bring; I just found them bland and/or annoying which made it difficult to care for them during the parts where they're showing deeper characterisation or are supposed to be foils for the protagonists. I think it's also hard for me to have much sympathy for a rich girl who abuses her sister and friend for fun and profit, so I think the story needed to work much harder to make me care about her.

I enjoyed my time with the game and as a romance it's very sweet and lovely, but I'm also happy to be done with it. Will still recommend this game for fans of romance but just be warned, the treasure hunting antagonists can be a bit hit or miss.
