KismetRose rated Demonheart

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Demonheart was one of the first complete visual novels I ever finished and it left a huge impression on me. Having so many choices to make for the main character's responses spoiled me in the best way. You can develop a personality for Bright through her responses (and the game's alignment system), which I adore! The art has a storybook charm and the music fits well. It doesn't take long for the voice actors to grow on you and it didn't take long for the characters to amuse me, as well. I have a love of dark fantasy and noir, and this made me think of both. The story isn't a happy or peaceful one, but it is interesting, and there are endings where Bright can come out ahead, if only just by a hair.

But Demonheart isn't for the tender-hearted, and it's definitely not for children. Blood, gore, and violence are shown in art and text. Character attitudes include misogyny and homophobia. Depending on player choices, Bright can be callous and cruel, but those options will usually be obvious and presented with others. Choices toward the end don't always have lighter-hearted options, however.

Sexual content includes advances and limited physical contact. If the player dislikes the characters, their advances will probably be unwelcome and some things they say will be more disturbing. Rape is mentioned but not shown. Unwanted attention can usually be resisted via responses and will stop soon after, but not always immediately. Even if you aren't romancing a love interest, they may get obsessive over Bright anyway.

All of the characters in Demonheart are problematic and may seem irredeemable, including the love interests. Any of them can hurt Bright; all of them have done terrible things that can't be excused. But they are more nuanced than they initially seem, and trying different things in later playthroughs can reveal a lot about them. If any of this sounds awful to you, this VN probably isn't your jam. If this intrigues you, you'll probably have fun with it.
