openda1965 rated Rain and the Wolf

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

I'm an absolute whore for manhwa/webcomics and this very much felt like a comic, which is for me a very good thing.

I don't think I'm saying anything revolutionary when I say the art is absolutely beautiful. The story is interesting and engaging, with tension and twists (no spoilers!) that feel like the writer really thought about their characters and put effort into that the story is largely character focused -- you're feeling with them, and it works. Their relationship unfolds naturally, with emotions and stakes on both sides clearly outlined, and they make sense. The sex scenes weren't contrived: they felt like a part of the natural progression of the story, and I love that.

There are a lot lot of choices, and while I appreciate that, I appreciate more that the dev was kind enough to allow you to opt out of choosing a brutal bad ending. But in some ways that made the rest of the game somewhat clunky, and some of the choices I was given between the responses felt oddly out of character for the vibe of the conversation. I'd be given two choices where Rain was suddenly angry or paranoid over something almost unrelated when the conversation leading up to it had a completely different trajectory. It almost felt like the game wanted me to choose confrontation, or something went slightly off-kilter in managing the flow of choices behind the scenes.

Given that and that I got the sense that there were multiple dark endings I feel almost like the happy ending(s?) were almost an afterthought and this was more meant for people who like dark games, which is sadly not me. (Not a criticism: there's a huge market out there, this is purely personal choice) I really really enjoyed the happy route I did play but I was too anxious to play any other routes that might lead me to a darker ending.

If you're one of those people that plays all the endings, you will definitely enjoy that aspect of this game. It just was a slight negative for me personally.

Regardless, this is a damn good game with solid writing and deeply-developed characters, which is strangely hard to find in a visual novel.
